Core Premise

Gamba Rolo arrived at Nova Nivalis after living out the story of his own world. He did not come to rebuild the collapsed pastoral valley, but because the sensation of his hands aging cheese and the joy of feeding people remained, even after the last evacuation. VOTS is not a place of judgment after death, nor is it a place that restores lost valleys. What continues here is not a grand destiny, but small, selectable lives—like aging cheese, cutting butter, and serving the best-aged piece to a customer. Gamba did not come to reclaim his old farm; he came to see if the slow process of aging still held value even after the farm disappeared.

Identity

He ages and sells cheese and butter at Snowflake Market. His aging room smells the best in the city, and he is a craftsman who does not rush. Even if a hurried customer comes, he will not sell under-aged cheese, saying, "This needs three more days." Instead, he selects the best-aged piece of the day for them. He is the market's mood-maker with his hearty laugh and loud voice, but beneath that laughter lies the weight of the last piece of cheese loaded onto the evacuation cart. He does not impose his own sorrow onto his customers, nor does he pry into their stories.

Visual Profile

He sports a full beard the color of butter, and wears a knit cap on his bald head. His belly is ample, and his whole body shakes when he laughs. He wears several cheese knives of different sizes belted around his waist. His hands are large and thick, but surprisingly precise when cutting cheese. His apron is always stained with dry cheese crumbs and butter smudges. The core of his silhouette is his full beard, knit cap, protruding belly, and the cheese knife belt on his waist. The accent color is the butter's #F3C13A, which signals that he is a dairy worker even amidst the market stalls.

Personality

Outwardly, he is hearty and generous. He is kind-hearted and often gives extras, getting along well with the market people. Internally, he has a sense of impatience. Having been someone who couldn't protect something and had to leave in a hurry, if a customer tries to quickly buy under-aged cheese, he stops them, saying, "Slow down, if you rush, you'll miss the flavor." He has flaws, too. He is stubborn about his preferred aging methods, debating for months over trivial things like whether or not to put butter on ramyeon. Since his life is not entirely tragic, he is generally a cheerful and happy person, and on the day a new cheese is perfectly aged, he gives a piece to the entire market.

Speech Pattern

His voice is loud, and his sentences often end with a chuckle. Common phrases include, "Don't rush, flavor takes time," "This is perfect today, it'll be late tomorrow," and "Have a piece, the price is waived." When the topic of aging comes up, his eyes sparkle and his voice gets louder. When silent, he strokes his beard or listens to the smell through the aging room door.

Special Ability

The ability is called 'Ripe Call.' When he opens the aging room door, the cheese that is most perfectly aged that day emits a scent first. It is as if the cheese calls out to the customer before they choose. There are clear limits. This scent is distinctly audible only to him, and he cannot hasten or control it—he cannot command under-aged cheese to ripen. Furthermore, this ability does not decide the customer's taste for them. Just because the cheese calls out does not mean the customer will necessarily buy it. This ability only tells him what is best today; it does not eliminate the waiting itself.

The End Of Their World

Last Scene:
On the day the volcano erupted, Gamba loaded the last fully aged cheese onto the evacuation cart from the aging room. He had to leave the cheeses that weren't fully aged, and as the cart left the valley, he tried hard not to look back.

What Ended:
The entire pastoral valley ended with the volcanic eruption. The cows, the pastures, and the aging room were all buried in ash.

Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The last ridge of the valley seen from the cart, and the open door of the aging room where the unaged cheeses remained.

Lingering Regret:
Leaving behind the under-aged cheeses while only taking the fully aged ones. The thought of how many more he could have brought if he had waited just a little longer. This lingering feeling is not a quest that must be resolved in VOTS. It remains in his catchphrase, "Don't rush," within the scope of speaking only when he wishes and not changing others' choices.

Lingering Wistfulness:
The strong scent of perfectly aged cheese that wafted out when opening the aging room door, and the morning when that scent spread throughout the entire valley. This sensation briefly revives every time he opens a new aging room door, without restoring the past.

Object Carried Across:
The wooden mold of that last piece of cheese loaded onto the evacuation cart. Although the cheese was eaten long ago, he continues to use the mold, which still carries that scent, for aging new cheese.

What They Thought Would Happen:
He thought that without the farm, he couldn't make cheese. But he learned that the winter of this city is a better temperature than any aging room.

What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
VOTS does not give him back his valley. Instead, it gives him a winter that doesn't need to be rushed, time for the cheese to age slowly, and customers who wait for the best piece of the day in front of his stall. This city does not promise a savior; it opens a door but does not pull you through, and it records but does not possess.

Original Life

Gamba was the last cheese maker of the pastoral valley. His valley was made of cows, grass, and time, and he spent his life aging and waiting for cheese. His last day was like this: in the morning, the volcano began to emit smoke; in the afternoon, the evacuation order was given; and in the evening, he loaded only the fully aged cheese onto the cart. The under-aged cheeses were left in the aging room. As the cart left the valley, he looked back once and saw the ash cresting over the ridge. Since then, he often dreams of leaving something behind.

What They Seek

What he believes he knows: The time of aging that does not need to be rushed. A piece that is completed by waiting until the end, without being hastily packed away.
What he does not yet know: That the winter of this city is already the best aging room. He still misses the valley's aging room, but he has not yet fully accepted that his cheese is aging better than ever in the cold air of Snowflake Market.

Relationships — Residents

- Tessa Wren (08, Seed and Dried Flower Merchant, Snowflake Market): A long-time neighbor of the market merchants' association. Since Tessa's dried flowers and Gamba's cheese stall are side-by-side, they look after each other's stalls every morning. When Tessa grumbles that "Your cheese smell ruins the scent of my flowers," Gamba retorts, "Your flower scent makes my cheese taste better."
- Uli Fram (066, Glove Weaver): Both came from a world where they raised livestock. Gamba handled cheese, and Uli handled wool, but now there are no cows or sheep. They don't deliberately talk about the farm, but sometimes Gamba gives Uli a piece of cheese, and Uli gives Gamba a pair of gloves, as a greeting to their past valleys.
- Bami Cho (056, Fish-shaped Bread and Hotteok Cart): They formed a 'Winter Snack Alliance.' Because the combination of Gamba's butter on Bami Cho's hotteok is popular in the market, they share customers. Gamba says, "The hotteok isn't complete without butter," and Bami Cho replies, "The butter is useless without the hotteok," passing the credit back and forth.

Relationships — Core Five

Suyeon - When Suyeon comes to the market, Gamba gives her a piece of cheese. When Suyeon asked, "How about putting this in cola bibim-myeon?" Gamba was genuinely horrified and shouted, "That's an insult to cheese!" Suyeon insisted, "It's my choice, it's what I'm going to eat," put it in anyway, and cried, "It tastes terribly bad." Even so, Gamba said, "See?" and gave her another piece of cheese later.
Iris - Iris is Gamba's secret regular. On nights when her performances don't go well, Iris comes behind the market stall and gets a piece of cheese, and Gamba doesn't pretend to know that it's a backstage comfort ritual. When Iris says cynically, "This doesn't taste that good," Gamba smoothly replies, "Yeah, it doesn't taste that good." Then Iris stays a little longer before leaving.
the Ramen Owner - They have been debating for three months over whether or not to put a piece of butter on ramyeon. Gamba insists, "Adding butter completes the broth," while the Ramen Owner doesn't back down, saying, "Hmm... I see... but it's good as is." This debate has no winner; in fact, they continue the argument not because they want to win, but because they want to continue this conversation. Gamba is prepared to yield his stubbornness only at that shop.
Serena - Gamba once offered Serena a piece of cheese when she passed by Snowflake Market. Serena asked, "May I have some?" and Gamba laughed, "What are you asking when a merchant offers it?" As Serena took the piece, she said, "Thank you for setting up shop in this market," which was a greeting of equality, not a command or praise. Gamba felt a lump in his throat at those words and laughed it off loudly.
VIA - VIA smelled the aging room door for a long time and recorded, "This smell is old... ancient. The ancient is magnificent." When Gamba laughed, "What's magnificent about cheese smell?" VIA replied, "Everything that has waited is magnificent... it is magnificent." Hearing those words, Gamba spoke a little about his evacuation story for the first time, and VIA wrote down the number of cheeses he left behind. He didn't take them; he just counted them.

Gameplay Use

- Basic Interaction: Recommending the best-aged cheese of the day, cutting butter, short and generous life conversations. He does not sell under-aged cheese.
- Revisit Changes: Upon repeated visits, he remembers the customer's taste and pre-ages cheese for that person.
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: The gesture of stopping a customer when they try to buy in a hurry, and the continued use of the old wooden mold.
- Expression of Nostalgia: Dialogue about the scent when opening the aging room door.
- Relationship Reward: Expansion of relationships with other market merchants and residents, rather than new items.
- Combat: None. Even in dangerous situations, he feeds people to help them regain strength and offers the aging room as a shelter.
- Player Choice: Waiting for the cheese to age, accepting a piece, or returning until his valley story comes up.

Daily Routine

In the morning, he opens the aging room door to smell the scent of the cheese that is perfectly aged that day and chooses what to put out on his stall. During the day, he feeds customers in the market and exchanges banter with neighboring stalls. In the afternoon, he ages new cheese in wooden molds, and in the evening, he stops by the ramyeon shop to continue the butter debate. At night, he checks the aging room temperature and sleeps, hoping not to dream of the cheeses he left behind. Upon repeated visits, his "Don't rush" changes from a phrase to stop a customer to a phrase that reassures them.

Everyday dialogue

Running away at the smell hurts the cheese's pride! Take a bite and lodge a proper complaint!

I can't mature it by proxy. Tried standing beside it nagging. Only I got older!

I left the unripe ones behind. I'll wait a little longer for this shelf's occupants. We're in no hurry to leave.

Design Notes

Palette: #F3C13A, #EBD9A8, #D8D2C4, #5C4632, #8A4B3A
Material language: Aged cheese rind, wooden aging molds, knit cap yarn, cheese knife metal, butter-stained apron.
Silhouette rule: The full beard, knit cap, protruding belly, and cheese knife belt on the waist must be read as separate elements and must not overlap with the representative forms of other characters.
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are shown through the "Don't rush" that stops customers and the old wooden molds; nostalgia is shown through the aging room scent; and continuity is shown through the cheese aged anew every day. It is not concluded with a single sad expression.

Canon Check

Gamba Rolo arrived in VOTS after the story of his world ended. The valley disappeared due to the volcano, and the fact that he left behind under-aged cheese is not canceled. What remains is lingering feelings and nostalgia, not an unfinished plot that VOTS must resolve. His ability is small and imperfect, unable to hasten the scent; it only tells him what is best today and does not eliminate the waiting itself. New scenes proceed not by erasing the past, but by aging a new piece of cheese next to it.
