Before coming to VOTS, this person lived out the story of his own world to the very end. He did not come to find a dry water vein; rather, his ears, which had listened to the water flow even after sealing the last well, remained with him upon arriving in Nova Nivalis. This city is neither the afterlife nor a place of judgment, nor is it a paradise that returns water to dry land. What continues here is not a massive search for water veins, but a small, revitalized day of pressing an ear to the wall to find a blocked pipe, and making warm water flow into someone's home.
Identity
Gondo Rif is a water and hot water pipe meter reader in the Silver Canal district. He checks the pipes by pressing his ear to the walls, listening to the sound of the water, ensuring the city's water flow remains unobstructed. He was once the one who sealed the water, but now he is the one who allows the water to flow—finding blockages, clearing them, and making hot water run in homes that previously only had cold water. To the city's people, he is the inconspicuous but indispensable worker who safeguards the warm water on a winter morning.
Visual Profile
He neatly combs his dark teal hair with pomade and maintains a well-trimmed mustache of the same hue. He wears a bag containing meters and inspection tools slung over his shoulder, and he always wears knee pads—since he frequently kneels to inspect the pipes. His ears appear unusually large and his earlobes are developed, leading people to often say he must have excellent hearing. He carries a metal listening cup (a device similar to a stethoscope) against the walls. The core of his silhouette is the teal pomade and mustache, the meter bag on his shoulder, and the knee pads and listening cup. The accent color is deep teal #0F6466, reading deep and calm amidst the cold water hue of the Silver Canal.
Personality
On the surface, Gondo is diligent, meticulous, and a little taciturn. He is the type to press his ear to the wall before offering a greeting, making him seem indifferent to strangers. However, when the topic of water flow comes up, his eyes brighten and he becomes talkative—he refers to the water sounds in the pipes as a 'song,' describing how one house's water flows like a hum while another is choked up. His flaw is excessive responsibility. If a house's water is blocked, he treats it as his own fault, and the sound lingers in his ears even at night, keeping him awake. Yet, he is not a tragic figure. When a blocked pipe is cleared and the water rushes forth again, he rejoices like a child, and he smiles awkwardly at the greetings of the homeowners whose hot water has returned.
Speech Pattern
His speech is slow and low, and he frequently uses metaphors related to water flow. "The water here is choked up.", "This pipe is humming a tune." Frequent phrases: "You can tell if you listen closely.", "A blockage sounds discordant.", "Water is honest; it cries out when it hurts.", "It would be better to open it than to seal it." When faced with a difficult story, instead of answering, he presses his ear to the wall and closes his eyes—a habit of calming his mind with the sound of the water. His silence is listening for a long time with the listening cup pressed against the wall without saying a word.
Special Ability
Waterline Listening — When Gondo presses his ear to a wall or pipe, he can discern blockages in the water flow through sound. Smoothly flowing water emits a steady tone, while a blockage produces a discordant, creaking sound. There are clear limits and costs. While he can locate the blockage, he must physically clear it with his hands—listening is diagnosis, not cure. Furthermore, this ability cannot hear anything outside the water lines. It does not tell him where a person's heart is blocked, or why someone is choked up. Even Gondo's own blocked heart (the guilt of sealing) cannot be heard by this ear. The ability only allows the city's water to flow; it cannot clear the blockages between people.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
After the city's water dried up, Gondo, the subterranean water vein explorer, sealed the last remaining well. Covering that well, where no water came out anymore, and piling earth over it was the last thing he did in that world.
What Ended:
The city of water ended. As the underground water veins dried up, people left, and his work of seeking water flow concluded with a sealing.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The pile of stones stacked over the last sealed well, and the sound of water that could no longer be heard beneath it. The silence, the first time in his life of hearing water sounds, where his ears heard nothing at all.
Lingering Regret:
He was a person who spent his life opening water lines to bring water to people, yet his final act was sealing—'blocking' the water. The fact that he ended as a closer after living as an opener still weighs on his mind. This lingering feeling is not a quest for VOTS to resolve. It remains in the habit of him meticulously counting his opening records, hoping that what he opened was more than what he sealed.
Lingering Wistfulness:
The sound of water that first reached him from beyond the wall when he found a new water vein deep underground. The emotion of confirming with his own ears that water was flowing, alone, in a place no one knew.
Object Carried Across:
The listening cup used when sealing the last well. Now, he uses it not for sealing, but for clearing.
What They Thought Would Happen:
He believed that someday it would rain, the water veins would revive, and he could reopen the sealed well. But the water did not return, and the well remained sealed.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
The place to listen to the city's water flow every day, and to clear blockages so the water can flow. VOTS does not return the dry water veins or the sealed wells. Instead, it gives him the Silver Canal—a place where water flows instead of being blocked—a place where his ledger of openings grows thicker every day compared to his ledger of sealings.
Original Life
He was a subterranean water vein explorer in a city of water. He found deep underground water flows by sound, dug wells, and cleared dry pipes to bring water to the people. His ears were an asset to the city—when he pressed his ear to a wall, he could know where the water was and where it was blocked. After the water veins began to dry up, he tried to conserve the diminishing water, but eventually, the city was abandoned. He ended his work by sealing the last well. For someone whose life was dedicated to opening water, the final act of closing it felt like going against the meaning of his profession. He came here carrying only that one listening cup.
What They Seek
On the surface, what Gondo seeks is 'a life of opening, not sealing.' He wants to remember his work as one of opening, not closing. Unbeknownst to him, what he must find is the fact that his ledger of openings is already much thicker than his ledger of sealings. He clings to the last sealing, believing himself to be a 'closer,' but what he does every day in this city is only open blocked water lines. The years he has lived as an opener are far longer than the last time he closed something. The city does not tally that for him. It merely ensures the places where he opens the water flow every day.
Relationships — Residents
- Solenne Vey (04, Night Laundry): Responsible for the laundry's hot water. Solenne's night laundry relies on hot water, and Gondo is in charge of inspecting that hot water line. If the water cools down, Gondo hears the sound and comes before Solenne even calls. The two night workers confirm each other's shifts by the sound of the water in the pipes.
- Ove Rendt (044, Ferryman of Finished Myths): Water flow consultation. Ove was a boatman, and Gondo is a listener of water flow, so they often discuss the water flow of the Silver Canal. If Ove says, "The water here is slow these days," Gondo presses his ear to check.
- Berta Mum (028, Bathhouse Owner): Responsible for the bathhouse plumbing. The hot water pipes of Kim Seorim's bathhouse fall under Gondo's jurisdiction. When Berta's bath becomes lukewarm, Gondo clears the pipes, and Berta rewards him with one bath instead of money. Gondo considers that bath a winter treat.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - There was an incident where Suyeon, after practice, went to shower but only cold water came out, causing her to cry out, "Aaaah, it's cold!" and run out. Gondo rushed over, pressed his ear to the wall, and cleared the blocked hot water pipe, saying, "The water here is choked up." Suyeon was amazed, asking, "Water flow can get choked up too?" Gondo rarely joked, saying, "Someone who uses an ice sword is surprised by cold water." Since then, Suyeon calls Gondo first if the water stops coming out.
Iris - Iris once had trouble when a pipe blocked while she was using water for stage effects. Gondo heard the sound, found the blockage, and cleared it. Instead of saying "Thank you," Iris only said, "You have good ears." Gondo saw one of Iris's drones, which was wet, and said, "This is outside my jurisdiction," and didn't touch it. Iris appreciates that boundary—that he doesn't meddle in others' domains.
the Ramen Owner - The hot water in the ramen shop's kitchen is half the flavor of the broth, so Gondo meticulously manages that piping. When the owner says, "The water has improved," Gondo replies, "The pipe is humming a tune." The owner just responds noncommittally, "Hmm... I see..." but when Gondo comes to check the pipes in the early morning, he silently keeps a bowl of broth warmed up. It is a quiet winter alliance between the one who checks the water and the one who makes broth with it.
Serena - Gondo was the consultant when Serena first brought water flow to this city. When deciding where to route the city's first water line, Serena did not command but asked Gondo, "May we let the water flow here?" When Gondo pressed his ear to the wall and replied, "This place wants the water to flow," Serena routed the line there. Gondo holds a quiet pride that his ears were part of the city's water flow from the very beginning.
VIA - VIA records Gondo's ledger of openings and his ledger of sealings side-by-side. One day, when VIA showed him, writing, "There are more openings... much more," Gondo looked at the difference in the thickness of the two ledgers for the first time. VIA added, "What was sealed is also a trace... but what was opened is thicker." Since then, every time he opens a line, Gondo counts it out loud, and VIA records the number.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Inspecting water/hot water pipes, diagnosing and opening blockages, short conversations using water flow metaphors.
- Revisit Changes: Remembering which homes' water lines frequently get blocked, and inspecting those pipes in advance during repeated visits. Witnessing the habit of counting openings together.
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: Meticulously counting the opening records, and momentarily freezing when the word 'sealing' is mentioned.
- Expression of Nostalgia: Pausing to listen to the water sounds for a long time with his ear against the wall, and sensory dialogue about the sound of the first discovered water vein.
- Relationship Rewards: Revealing connections with residents who use water, such as the laundry, bathhouse, and ramen shop, through Gondo's water line management.
- Combat: None. Even in dangerous situations, he moves to secure an escape route by opening a water line or signaling location by sound.
Daily Routine
In the morning, he packs his meter bag and wipes his listening cup—it must be clean as it goes to his ear. During the day, he tours the Silver Canal district, inspecting the pipes of each home and clearing any blockages. Most of his day is spent kneeling and pressing his ear to the wall. In the afternoon, he discusses water flow with Ove and checks Berta's bathhouse plumbing. In the evening, he records the number of pipes cleared that day, the 'opening count,' in his ledger. In the early morning, he checks the ramen shop's hot water one last time to close out the day. To players who visit repeatedly, he initially only talks about pipes, but later boasts by reciting the count, saying, "Three openings today."
Everyday dialogue
The water's coughing. No need to apologize for calling me. I make a living listening to it.
Turn the valve this far. Like shaking a hand, not strangling an enemy.
My hands finished their old work by sealing water away… Now I run a working tap once more, just because.
Design Notes
Palette: #0F6466, #0A4446, #D9E8E6, #7BA8A6, #C4753A
Material language: Brass listening cup, meters, knee pads, teal pomade, water-soaked pipes.
Silhouette rule: The teal pomade and mustache - shoulder meter bag - knee pads and listening cup must be read as distinct elements and not overlap with other water or meter-reading characters.
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are shown through the habit of counting openings and the pause before the word 'sealing'; nostalgia is shown through the pause of listening to the water sounds for a long time; continuity is shown through the pipes he clears daily and the growing opening ledger.
Canon Check
Gondo Rif arrived in VOTS after the story of his own world ended. Neither the dry water veins nor the sealed wells returned, and he could not reverse the last act of ending his life as a closer after living as an opener. Waterline Listening cannot clear the blockages between people; it only allows the city's water to flow. What remains is lingering feeling and nostalgia, not an unfinished plot that the city must resolve. New scenes continue alongside the past, not erasing it.
