Core Premise

Mut Havel arrived in Nova Nivalis after living out the story of his own world. He did not come to solve an unfinished incident, but rather, the hand that was writing his final logbook on a ship trapped in the ice, and the sensation pointing north, flowed into this city. VOTS is not a room of judgment, nor is it a place that forcibly stops wandering. What continues here is not a grand destiny, but small lives that can be chosen again, like a bowl of ramyeon, a finger pointing the direction of an alley, or old sea tales told in a drunken haze. Mut anchored that life in the ramyeon alley.

Identity

Mut Havel lives in the ramyeon alley, running a strange shop called 'The Mapless Map Shop.' There are no maps actually for sale. Instead, he gathers stories from people who have walked the city's alleys and points out 'paths not on the map.' During the day, he sits on the threshold of his shop, pointing directions to passersby, and in the evening, he drinks broth at a ramyeon shop regular. Though he is a sailor who knows north everywhere, he is always confused about the way home. He can point out others' paths, but he never forces anyone anywhere.

Visual Profile

He ties his salt-weathered, stiff, grayish-white hair into a single braid, and his beard is braided into three strands. His left eye is cloudy from an old blizzard, so when looking for direction, he only narrows his right eye. His old peacoat has a few mismatched buttons, and there are marks on the sleeves from ropes. He always holds a compass without a needle in his hand—even without a needle, he knows north. His gait is slightly unsteady, as if on a ship. His attire consists of a thick peacoat and a neckerchief. His signature items are the needleless compass, the braided beard, and the old peacoat. The core of his silhouette is the braided beard—peacoat—held compass, and a single accent color on a small sprite reveals that he is an 'old man from the sea.'

Personality

On the surface, Mut is a gruff, talkative old sailor. He stops anyone to tell old sea stories, and his spirit is soothed by a bowl of broth. However, deep down, there is a heart that cannot anchor. Having lived his whole life on a ship, he doesn't know how to stay in one place. This is why he gets confused about the way home—he can go anywhere, but belongs nowhere. His flaw is revealed in drunken confessions. When alcohol takes hold, he suddenly spills out his true feelings, and he feels ashamed the next day. Yet, he still comes to the ramyeon shop every day. The very fact that he returns to the same spot every day, unable to anchor, is itself an anchor.

Speech Pattern

Gruff and slow informal speech. It is mixed with the exaggeration and old language characteristic of sailors. Frequent phrases: "North is over there.", "My home? ...That's always confusing.", "When the sea freezes...", "This alley isn't on any map. That's why I know.", (when drunk) "This shop is my lighthouse." His mannerism is to first look at the needleless compass before pointing with his finger when giving directions. His way of silence is fiddling with the compass. When asked a difficult question—about anchoring—Mut looks at the compass and trails off, saying, "I know north, but..."

Special Ability

Ability Name: True North Sense.
No matter where he is, whether in a blizzard or underground, Mut knows exactly which way is north. The needleless compass is merely decoration; his body knows the direction. Thus, he points directions to the lost and maps the city's alleys by cardinal direction.
Limitation and Cost: Even though he knows north, he is always confused about the way home. He knows the direction but not the 'place to return to.' Because he navigated by the North Star his entire life on a ship, his sense points only to direction, not to a destination. And this ability does not restore a frozen sea or a lost ship—even knowing north, the harbor to return to has already vanished. The ability does not solve his wandering. This is because being able to go anywhere also means being able to anchor nowhere.

The End Of Their World

Last Scene:
On the day the sea completely froze and the ship was trapped in the ice, Mut wrote his final logbook on the deck where he could go no further. The world ended the moment he put a period at the end of the last sentence.

What Ended:
The world where the sea froze over ended. The voyage, the harbor, and the lives of the sailors all stopped in the ice.

Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The endless white ice floe beyond the bow trapped in the ice, and the last wet ink of the logbook.

Lingering Regret:
He should have moored the ship at a harbor before it froze, and landed the people who sailed with him. He tried to go to the end and was trapped with them. This regret is not a quest that VOTS must resolve. It quietly remains in his habit of being confused about the way home, in his heart that cannot decide where to return.

Lingering Wistfulness:
The sensation of the ship gently stopping and swaying when the mooring rope was wrapped around the stake on the night he moored at the harbor.

Object Carried Across:
The old compass with its needle missing. It was what he held until the very end in the frozen sea, and now, though it has no needle, it remains in his hand as a memory of direction.

What They Thought Would Happen:
They believed that if the ice melted, they could sail again. But spring never came to that sea, and the ship remained forever in the ice.

What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
The ramyeon alley where they can return every day, and people waiting for someone to point the way. VOTS does not melt the frozen sea to set the ship afloat again. Instead, it gives Mut a place to learn to anchor, not to sail.

Original Life

In his original world, Mut was a sailor. He lived his entire life on a ship, navigating only by the North Star, and never stayed on land for long. On his last day, as the sea rapidly froze over, his ship became trapped in the ice. He could neither go forward nor return. Mut wrote his final logbook on the deck—recording the location, the weather, and the fact that there was no more course. When he put a period at the end and looked up, a door was standing on the snowy horizon of the frozen sea. It was the first time he abandoned his ship, but he walked onto the ice floe toward that door.

What They Seek

What he knows: The art of anchoring, not the route. Mut now wants to learn how to moor a ship somewhere, rather than just how to move forward.
What he doesn't know: That he has already anchored. Returning to the ramyeon alley every day, drinking broth in the same spot, and talking with the same people every day—that is already anchoring. Even while being confused about the way home, he returns to that alley every day. His body has already found a harbor, but his heart is still on the ship.

Relationships — Residents

Sava Quill (13, Former Train Conductor): Comrades of the 'Last Operators.' Sava remembers the last run of the train, and Mut remembers the last voyage of the ship. The two meet in the ramyeon alley and clink glasses, saying, "We are people who passed beyond the final station." Even though they know each other's last stories, they listen as if it's the first time every time.
Ban Holo (038, Bridge Gate Operator): A connection from North Wind Pier. Mut often visits the drawbridge managed by Ban, watching the bridge open and close as if during the days when ships came and went. Ban understands the mood of the wind, and Mut knows north. The two stand silently side-by-side at the pier, reading the tides and the wind.
Ove Rendt (044, Ferryman of Ended Myths): A salute between sailors. When Mut first saw Ove, they exchanged a sailor's salute as if by agreement. Ove crossed the river, and Mut crossed the sea. The two recognized each other as 'those who carried people across the water.'

Relationships — Core Five

Suyeon - Suyeon once pressed Mut for stories of the sea in another world. When she asked, "Grandpa, can you walk on the sea if it freezes?" Mut enthusiastically told her tales of the icy sea. Suyeon chimed in, "I tried freezing the sea with an ice sword too," and the two stayed up all night talking about their ice stories. Mut told Suyeon, "You are a child who can go anywhere," and Suyeon replied, "So are you, Grandpa."
Iris - Iris asked Mut about the North Star story to incorporate the concept of a 'sailor navigating by the stars' into her performance. When Mut pointed out the constellations of old voyages, Iris recreated them as artificial constellations and projected them onto the stage. Iris thanked him without her usual flair, saying, "Your stars were real." Mut casually asked, looking at a dead drone, "Why did that star go out?" but didn't press further when Iris didn't answer.
the Ramen Owner - Mut once confessed to the Ramen Owner, while drunk, "This shop is my lighthouse." He, who could never anchor, called this shop a lighthouse because he returned to it every day. The Ramen Owner did not judge, merely writing in the ledger, "Mut, calls this shop a lighthouse," exactly as he heard it. When Mut felt ashamed the next day and asked, "What did I say yesterday?" the Ramen Owner only replied, "You said nothing." Mut understands that consideration.
Serena - Serena once asked Mut about the city's directions while passing through the ramyeon alley. "Where is north in this city?" When Mut pointed it out accurately, Serena said, "Thank you, you are someone who knows the way." When Mut said, "I know north, but I can't find home," Serena said not as a command, but as agreement—"Then you can make this alley your home. The spot is already there." Mut dwells on those words for a long time.
VIA - VIA and Mut play a game of 'creating mapless alleys.' When Mut determines the location of a new alley by direction, VIA draws it into the record book. "A path that didn't exist... has come into being." VIA collects the directions Mut points out to create the city's 'invisible nautical chart.' When Mut asks, "What's the point of writing this down?" VIA answers, "You are still navigating... but now it is a navigation of drawing maps."

Gameplay Use

- Basic Interaction: Pointing directions, guiding through mapless alleys, listening to old sea tales.
- Revisit Changes: Upon repeated visits, Mut tells the player about new alleys in the city, and one evening, he spills his true feelings about anchoring while drunk, only to feel ashamed the next day. If pressed, he fiddles with his compass and trails off; if left alone, he shares a piece of his last voyage on the icy sea.
- Expression of Lingering Attachment: His habit of being confused about the way home, the pause of not being able to decide where to return.
- Expression of Poignancy: A brief pause when holding the compass, dialogue about mooring ropes and the sway of a ship.
- Combat: None. In dangerous situations, he uses his True North Sense to point out the exact direction and escape route.
- Player Choice: Ask for directions, participate in the alley game, refrain from pressing about anchoring, or return again.

Daily Routine

In the morning, he sits on the threshold of 'The Mapless Map Shop,' pointing directions to passersby. He starts his day by looking at his compass, but the compass has no needle. During the day, he walks through the city, learning new alleys by direction, and draws 'mapless alleys' with VIA. In the evening, he returns to the ramyeon shop to drink broth and share old stories with Sava. On nights when he drinks, his true feelings leak out. When the night ends, he briefly gets confused about the way home, but eventually returns to the familiar spot in the alley. As the player visits repeatedly, the heart that cannot anchor behind Mut's gruffness slowly becomes visible, and one day, he hints at the fact that he has already anchored in this alley. Even if they become close, he does not reward them with an ending where the frozen sea melts. Instead, he briefly lets them hold the needleless compass.

Everyday dialogue

No maps! There's a navigator sitting here. And you ask better questions than paper does.

North's that way. Happiness is where the bread smells come from. Confused? Eat first.

I was too good at saying 'keep sailing.' Should have learned to say 'let's go ashore' too.

Design Notes

Palette: #37474F, #8C9BA5, #C7BFA8, #5A4A3A, #B5C9D3
Material language: Old peacoat, salt-weathered hair, brass compass, rope marks, cloudy left eye.
Silhouette rule: The braided beard—peacoat—held compass must be read as separate elements and must not overlap with the signature forms of other characters. The accent color #37474F is placed on the peacoat.
Emotional rule: Do not consume him as the 'sorrow of a wandering old man.' Lingering attachment is shown by his habit of being confused about the way home, poignancy by the sway of anchoring, and continuation by returning to the same alley every day.

Canon Check

Mut Havel arrived in VOTS after the sea of his world froze over. What remains is lingering attachment and poignancy, not an unfinished plot for VOTS to resolve. His ability only knows north and cannot restore the harbor to return to; it does not break the city's rule (what is ended is not canceled). The core cast does not save him—the Ramen Owner records only what he sees without judgment and covers up the drunken confession, Serena suggests making the alley home not as a command but as agreement, and VIA only records the directions without forcing anchoring. Nova Nivalis's new scene does not erase the frozen sea but attaches a new harbor beside it.
