The story of the grand mansion where she lived closed its final page, and Peni, the youngest maid, flowed into this city while polishing the stairs on that last day. VOTS is neither a paradise for children nor a place of punishment. What continues here is not grand adventure, but a life of pushing a mop across a wet staircase, watching the water spots dry, and receiving one egg as payment for errands. Peni does not yet fully understand the weight of the word 'ended' regarding her former world, but she knows that no matter which world it is, the stairs become clean when they are wiped.



[Identity]

Peni Wak is a child who cleans the wet stairs of Lantern Inn Alley. This alley, connecting the inn, the bedding shop, and the bathhouse, is always damp and steamy, making the stairs slippery, and Peni pushes a mop the size of herself to clean them. It is less about doing what is ordered and more about the rhythm of cleaning itself being enjoyable. Her cleaning is actual labor that allows the alley residents to walk without slipping. No one expects great things from Peni, but if she doesn't come out for even one day, the alley stairs quickly become dangerous.

Her hair is water-blue, tied in short pigtails, with the ends sticking out, giving her a perpetually slightly damp, puppy-like appearance. Her eyes are large, round, and blue, and like a child who works with water, her eyelashes are often beaded with moisture. Her skin is the type that gets red easily on her cheeks, and her sleeves are always wet up to her elbows. Her build is small and sturdy. Her signature outfit is a waterproof apron that reaches her knees and yellow boots covered in frog stickers. Some stickers are partially peeled off from being soaked in water, which Peni considers badges of honor. Her signature prop is a wooden mop as tall as her, with a handle worn smooth. The core of her silhouette is the sticking-out pigtails, the wet sleeves, the large boots, and the mop the size of her body. Peni is bright and energetic, but she is quick to read the moods of adults. She retains the habit from her time as a maid, often saying, 'I'll do it,' before anyone can get angry. Her strengths are her tireless cheerfulness and her knack for turning anything into a game. Her flaw is that when praised, she becomes flustered and ends up doing even more work—because she is unaccustomed to being acknowledged. She is not a tragic child. She draws pictures with the water spots on the stairs, dances with her mop as a partner, and counts frog stickers while playing the day away. However, sometimes, there are moments when she stands at the very top step of the stairs, looking down for a long time, without being asked. That was the spot where she used to see off guests from the top of the mansion's stairs.



[Speech Pattern]

Fast, cheerful, and with short sentences. With adults, a maid's tone slips out, becoming overly polite, but with peers, it quickly switches to casual speech. Frequent phrases: 'I'll do it!', 'It won't slip, this is my section.', 'This isn't dancing, it's mopping.', 'Just one more step to wipe.' When excited, her speech trails off like a song. When her mind is complicated, she stops talking and just pushes the mop back and forth.



[Special Ability]

The name of her ability is 'Steps Without Stumbling.' No matter how old or slippery the stairs are, they never creak or slip beneath Peni's feet. Thus, the way she moves up and down the stairs while pushing her mop looks more like a dance than cleaning. There is a clear limit. This stability applies only to Peni herself. If another person steps on those stairs, they still creak and slip. Peni cannot make the stairs safe for others; she can only wipe away the moisture with her own body. The reason this ability doesn't solve her problems is that what she truly wants is not 'non-slippery stairs.' What she wants is play that doesn't require being told, but the ability still manifests only in the form of 'work.' The city's rules do not erase her past labor. It only differs in that the mopping is now done in an alley where no one is watching.

Peni was the youngest maid in the grand mansion. She was not a protagonist or a supporting character in the story, but a child who polished the stairs and received guests' coats in the background. When a grand ball was held, Peni would see off guests from the top of the stairs, and though no one ever called her name, she remembered the sound of every guest's shoes. As the story moved toward its final chapter, guests dwindled, and the servants gradually left. On the last day, even after the butler descended the stairs for the final time, Peni did not put down her mop. In the empty entrance hall, she wiped the marble stairs from top to bottom alone. When she looked up after finishing, there was no one. And then she stood before the wet stairs of this city.



[What They Seek]

What Peni perceives as what she seeks is 'the first play that wasn't ordered.' As a child who has only ever done what was commanded, she is curious about what it is like to choose to play on her own without anyone giving an order. Though she doesn't know it herself, what she must find is that her mopping steps are already that play. The rhythm of going up and down the stairs with her mop as a partner in an alley where no one orders her is already a dance, not work. However, Peni still cannot distinguish whether what she is doing is labor or play, which makes her awkward when someone watches.



[Relationships — Residents]

Koda Mim (073, Inn Bellboy Apprentice) — Peni's close partner in the inn alley. While Koda carries guest luggage, Peni cleans the stairs beforehand to make a path. They bet every day on 'who can go up and down the stairs faster,' and Peni always wins thanks to her ability not to slip, while Koda grumbles that it's cheating.
Pumi Ne (106, Bedding Shop) — Peni stops by the bedding shop to take a nap after finishing her cleaning. There is nowhere better than the bedding shop to dry her sleeves, which are wet from the water work. When Peni comes, Pumi Ne reluctantly gives her a dry blanket.
Solenne Vey (004, Night Laundry) — A senior in water work. Solenne taught her, 'You must fold your sleeves above the elbow so they don't get wet,' but Peni always forgets. Instead, she makes the stairs in front of Solenne's laundry shop shine the brightest without being asked.

Suyeon - Peni was caught secretly mimicking Suyeon's stage dance steps on the stairs. Instead of getting angry, Suyeon said, 'Your footwork is good?' and actually taught her one step, and now they sometimes practice together in the alley. Peni saw Suyeon crying in front of Cola Bibim-myeon, but she only asked, 'Unnie, why are you eating that?' and didn't stop her. Suyeon replied, 'This... is something I chose,' and Peni remembered those words for a long time.
Iris - Peni loves most when Iris's nine drones fly over the alley and reflect in the puddles. When Peni begged Iris to create a picture with the drone lights on the wet stairs, Iris pretended to be annoyed but made a star shape with all nine. 'Don't take pictures of this. It's not free.' But she didn't ask for payment.
the Ramen Owner - When Peni runs errands for the alley, the Ramen Owner gives her one egg as payment. When Peni asked, 'Can't you give it to me in money?', the Ramen Owner said, 'Hmm... that's true...' and started giving her eggs and coins the next day. Peni always boils those eggs at Pumi Ne's bedding shop.
Serena - She once met Serena at the City Hall Steps on a snowy day. When Serena asked, 'Do you clean these stairs too?', Peni reflexively said, 'I'll do it!'. Serena corrected her, 'It wasn't that I asked you to. Do it if you want to.' Peni, unfamiliar with words that weren't commands, fiddled with her mop for a long time.
VIA - VIA records the patterns of water spots left by Peni's mopping every day. 'Today, the ripples overlapped three times... it has become a pattern.' Peni is amazed that someone takes her mopping marks so seriously, so these days she deliberately pushes the mop in pretty shapes. VIA records that too.

[Daily Routine]

In the morning, she takes her mop and wipes down the stairs of the inn alley from top to bottom. She starts her day with a stair-climbing bet with Koda. During the day, she cleans the slippery spots in the alley and rushes off when errands come in. In the afternoon, she naps in Pumi Ne's bedding shop while drying her wet sleeves. In the evening, she practices steps with Suyeon or watches Iris's drones reflected in the puddles. At night, she goes to the top step of the stairs one last time to look down at the alley and props up her mop. If you visit repeatedly, the time she spends looking down from the top step gradually shortens, and instead, the time spent in the play she creates herself lengthens.
