Holt Nagel is someone who came to Nova Nivalis after the story of his own world ended with the demise of his base. He didn't come to mail unfinished letters; rather, he flowed into this city with the habit of guarding and the direction toward people that remained even after he dropped his last letter in the mailbox and left. This is not an afterlife, nor is it a place that refills the people into the base that became a ruin. What continues here is not a grand return, but a life of guarding the mailbox in the outskirts amidst the blizzard, opening and closing it with a key, and patrolling. Holt does not try to erase the fact that his base is empty. It is merely that the hands that used to guard it can now be used in the outskirts of this city, not at the last mailbox of the polar region.
Identity
In the outskirts, at the boundary where blizzards are frequent, Holt guards the mailbox. He opens and closes the mailboxes scattered in the outskirts with a key, checks them so they aren't buried in snow, and passes on any incoming letters to the city mailman. His job is not conspicuous, but it is necessary labor for the city—there must be a place to send and receive letters even in the outskirts for the people living on the boundary to be connected to the city. He is taciturn, so he works with his hands instead of words. When there is no patrol, he organizes his set of keys, and when letters arrive, he ensures they can be delivered properly. It is his long-standing habit not to urge people to put letters in the mailbox he guards.
Visual Profile
Hair: Steel-gray crew cut, as if frosted. Old frost marks remain dark red at both earlobes.
Eyes: Deep, pale blue-gray, the narrowed eyes of someone who has seen many blizzards. He answers with his eyes due to his silence.
Skin/Build: Large and sturdy build, rough and cracked hands. His back is straight and his steps are slow but unwavering.
Signature Attire: A thick, insulated coat with a collar pulled up to his neck, and a cluster of mailbox keys hanging from his waist. Gloved hands.
Signature Props: Mailbox key cluster, insulated thermos for patrolling, a light that doesn't go out even in a blizzard.
Silhouette Core: Frosted crew cut, large coat silhouette, key cluster at the waist. The accent color #4A6FA5 (Cold Blue) is repeated on the coat collar and key tassels.
Personality
He is taciturn, steadfast, and accustomed to being alone. He speaks very little, doing only what is necessary with his body. Although he seems gruff, he treats each mailbox like a person—'The mailbox calls to me,' he says rarely when he opens his mouth. His exterior is hard, but inside lies the loneliness of an unsent letter. His flaw is that he cannot imagine himself as someone who might receive a letter—while he guards others' letters with his life, he does not expect a letter to come to him. Nevertheless, when he sees a child or an elderly person standing alone on his patrol route, he silently takes off his coat for them.
Speech Pattern
Very briefly, in one or two words. He usually substitutes with nods or hand gestures.
Common Phrases:
- "...It's come in. Send it to the city."
- "The mailbox calls. Over there."
- "You don't need to put a letter in. Just leave it open."
- "It's cold. Take this." (While taking off his coat)
Mannerism: A gesture of rattling his key cluster once before speaking. When worried, he offers his thermos.
Style of Silence: When the topic of a letter coming to him comes up, he turns his head toward the blizzard. That silence means, 'There are no letters coming to me.'
Special Ability
Ability Name: The Postbox Call
What it can do: No matter how severe the blizzard, Holt does not lose the location of the mailbox. Even in a whiteout where everything is erased white, he knows the direction the mailbox is calling him. Therefore, even a mailbox buried anywhere in the outskirts, his feet find it first.
Limit/Cost: He only knows the location of the mailbox; he does not know if there is a letter inside or who sent it. All mailboxes call to him, but the one that calls him home—the mailbox addressed to him—is not in this city. That is the one call he cannot hear.
Reason for Not Solving the Problem: Even if he finds all the mailboxes, letters do not arrive. He can guard where letters are sent and received, but he cannot make anyone write a letter or reply. His ability cannot fill the loneliness of a life without a recipient, no matter how much he guards the mailboxes.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
In the polar base that had been deserted, on the last day the transport ship arrived, Holt put one letter in the base mailbox. The recipient field was blank. He closed the mailbox lid and boarded the ship, leaving the base receding into the blizzard.
What Ended:
The polar base, its last mailbox, and that small world where the members used to send letters to each other ended together.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The red mailbox of the base, which was gradually erased into white in the blizzard. That alone remained clear in his eyes until the end.
Lingering Regret:
He never filled out the recipient field of the letter he put in the mailbox that day. He left it blank because he didn't even know who it was written to. This lingering feeling is not a quest to be resolved, but remains only as the habit of guarding others' letters with his life while not expecting a letter to come to him.
Lingering Wistfulness:
The sound of the mailbox lid creaking as it froze in the blizzard, and the sensation of turning the key with his frozen hands. It briefly revives when the smell of cold metal and snow comes.
Object Carried Across:
The last letter sealed with a blank recipient field. He carries it in his coat pocket, neither mailing it nor opening it.
What They Thought Would Happen:
He believed that even if the base became empty, someone would someday open that mailbox and find his letter. But the base was buried in snow, and the letter was not found.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
The outskirts mailbox to guard every day, and the people who fill his thermos before patrol. The city does not revive his base. Instead, it gives him a place to live with an empty base, relationships where he guards letters without owning them, and a way to live while carrying a letter with no addressee.
Original Life
The last member of the polar base that had been deserted. Even after people evacuated one by one, he remained to guard the base and managed the mailboxes that the members used to send to each other. On the day the last transport ship arrived, he walked around the empty base and stood before the mailbox. He wrote one last letter but left the recipient field blank, so he put it in. He closed the mailbox lid and boarded the ship, hoping that letter would be found—or hoping it wouldn't be found. He watched for a long time from the deck as the blizzard erased the red mailbox into white.
What They Seek
What he seeks on the surface: A life with a recipient. He seeks someone to receive his letters, a place where he can be sent to someone.
What he must seek but doesn't know: That the recipient of the letter he put in the mailbox that day was actually himself. That letter, which he couldn't write to anyone, was ultimately a letter sent to his future self, and he doesn't yet know that he is the one who will open and read it.
Relationships — Residents
Voss Doorley (Threshold Keeper, boundary of the outskirts) · Nima Afterglow (Last Snow Collector, beyond Last Snow Platform) — The Outskirts Trio. The three who guard the city's boundaries gather under a single lantern on blustery nights to briefly share what each has guarded. Voss guards the threshold, Nima guards the last snow, and Holt guards the mailbox. They speak little, but they know each other is there.
Yan Snove (Current Mailman, ramyeon alley) — The city mailman and the outskirts guardian. Yan delivers the letters Holt collects from the outskirts mailboxes to the city. The ability of Yan's bag to grow heavier toward the recipient, combined with Holt's Postbox Call, ensures that letters from the outskirts do not get lost.
Sona Vent (Plaque/Sign Carver, behind Threshold Market, 86) — The person who engraved names on the mailboxes. After Sona engraved and affixed a name to Holt's outskirts mailbox, that mailbox stopped creaking even in the blizzard. VIA recorded that mailbox as 'the quietest door in the city.'
Lund Pavel (Night Book Return Box Keeper, beside the Records Office steps, 83) — A colleague who guards a 'box.' Holt guards the mailbox, and Lund guards the return box. When they rarely meet, they ask, 'What came in your box today?' and briefly share stories of the boxes they guarded all night.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - A guest brought in by the blizzard. When Suyeon insisted on training in the outskirts snow but lost her way in the whiteout, Holt, who does not lose the mailbox, guided her from one mailbox to another and brought her in. Suyeon grumbled, 'Just this much blizzard,' but accepted it obediently when Holt silently took off his coat for her. She smiled, saying she wouldn't lose next time.
Iris - A connection who showed the way a drone couldn't find. Iris tried to check the outskirts mailboxes with a drone, but the drones got lost in the blizzard. Holt did not lose it. Iris became quick with her talk about her creation, saying, 'You're annoyingly cool,' and Holt only nodded briefly. He didn't ask about the one lost drone.
the Ramen Owner - The person who refills the thermos before patrol. Before Holt goes out on his blizzard patrol, the Ramen Owner silently fills his thermos with hot broth. He only writes 'Went on patrol' in his ledger and doesn't ask why he goes out to the outskirts alone. He guards the spot without judging.
Serena - The founder who agreed to let him guard the outskirts spot. The spot of Holt guarding the outskirts mailbox became his by Serena's 'consent.' Serena did not command him to collect more letters; she simply agreed that there needed to be a place to guard even at the boundary. Even when she walked all the way to the edge of the city on a snowy day to offer a brief greeting, she did not change his patrol according to her will.
VIA - The rabbit that called his mailbox the quietest door. VIA recorded Holt's outskirts mailbox as 'the quietest door in the city.' 'The quietest door... it is quiet.' Sometimes a note from VIA is found inside that mailbox, but there is no urging to take it or to mail a letter. It simply records that the door exists there.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Guiding to the outskirts mailbox, receiving/handing over letters, short patrol accompaniment.
- Revisit Change: Remembers the letters the player mailed, but does not urge them to mail more. On repeated visits, he gradually shows the sealed letters in his pocket (though he never opens them).
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: The habit of turning his head toward the blizzard, the hand gesture of rattling his key cluster, the silence when the topic of a letter coming to him arises.
- Expression of Poignancy: Sensory dialogue about cold metal, the smell of snow, and the creaking of the mailbox.
- Relationship Reward: Instead of items, a change where he connects letters from other residents living in the outskirts to the city.
- Combat: None. Even in dangerous situations, he chooses to guide a lost person from one mailbox to another.
Daily Routine
In the early morning, he organizes his key cluster and takes the thermos filled by the Ramen Owner to go on patrol. The more severe the blizzard, the clearer the mailbox calls to him, so he goes even further on bad days. He passes on the letters collected during the day to Yan. At night, he gathers with the Outskirts Trio under a single lantern to exchange brief greetings. Before sleeping, he takes out the sealed letter from his coat pocket, holds it in his hand, and puts it back without opening it. If the player repeats, he first only guides to the mailbox, then shows that there is an unsent letter, and later, he brings up the topic for the first time, saying, '...I still don't know who this letter is for.'
Everyday dialogue
Post it. …That's the boot scraper.
[He brushes off snow and indicates the mailbox.] I get wet instead.
Recipient. Still… blank.
Design Notes
Palette: #4A6FA5, #D3DEEA, #26292E, #7A7168, #A83F3F
Material language: Rusted metal mailbox, key cluster, thick insulated coat, thermos, frost, and snow.
Silhouette rule: The frosted crew cut - large coat silhouette - key cluster at the waist must be read separately, and it must not overlap with the representative form of Voss Doorley in the outskirts. Voss has threshold/boundary gear; Holt has mailbox keys and a thermos.
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are shown by turning his head toward the blizzard, poignancy by cold metal and the smell of snow, and continuity by daily patrols and opening/closing the mailbox. Taciturnity is not depicted only as tragedy—he silently takes off his coat for the frozen.
Canon Check
Holt Nagel arrived in Nova Nivalis after the story of his world ended. What remains is lingering feelings and poignancy, not a vacant base that the city must fill. The Postbox Call ability cannot fill the loneliness of a life without a recipient, memories do not disappear, and the ending is not canceled. The Core Five do not solve his problems for him—the Ramen Owner only fills the thermos without judging, Serena agrees to let him guard the outskirts spot with consent without commanding him to collect letters, and VIA does not take his mailbox but only records it as 'the quietest door.'
