Mob Jin arrived at Nova Nivalis after living out the story of his own world to the end. However, his world never made him the protagonist. He was a pedestrian walking through the background of a completed webtoon, and even after the story ended, the direction of his steps remained, flowing into this city. VOTS is not a place where the Judgment Room forces the background into the role of the protagonist. What continues here is not a grand narrative, but the steps crossing the square, the moment discovered when someone sincerely searches for him, a small life that can be chosen again like an empty, prepared name slot.
Identity
Mob Jin lives as a person walking through Rainshield Square. He has no fixed profession. He simply walks across the square, passes through people, and exists as a background element. Because he was drawn to live that way originally. After coming to this city, he encountered a situation where he could 'be noticed' for the first time, but his body, which was long a background, still seeps among the people. He is accustomed to being the background for someone else's story, but he still doesn't know how to put his own story forward. So, he quietly, yet diligently, walks through the square every day.
Visual Profile
Gray hair. Up close, faint halftone dots remain, as if the printing was incomplete—a trace of having been roughly drawn as a background character. His face is so ordinary that it is strangely memorable once seen. His lack of distinctive features is his characteristic. A plain gray coat, a plain scarf, plain shoes. None of them try to stand out. His expression is always faint, and his gait is steady. His representative props are nothing special—a plain paper bag held in his hand, a plain scarf around his neck. The core of his silhouette is 'ordinariness itself,' and paradoxically, this single spot of achromatic gray as a point color draws the eye even in a small sprite.
Personality
On the surface, Mob seems like a person who is present yet absent. He speaks little, doesn't step forward, and tries not to take up space. However, inside, he is filled with a quiet yearning. He wants just one single close-up shot. That one moment when he becomes the focus, when the camera stops on his face, instead of being the background. His tendency to erase his flaws is an attempt to disappear. If someone looks at him, he becomes flustered and retreats. Because he was a background for so long, he doesn't know how to receive attention, so he runs away. Yet, he still comes out to the square every day. Even knowing he might not be found, just in case. He is not a pessimistic person. He calmly accepts that he is a background, but he cannot let go of one tiny wish.
Speech Pattern
A middle ground between low, flat casual speech and polite speech. He doesn't elaborate on his own story, and his sentences are short. Frequent phrases: "Me? Just a passerby.", "Didn't you see me? It's fine.", "Just one shot... No.", "Did you find me? Me?", "My name? It's... still in preparation." His verbal tic is closing a sentence with the word "just" when his own story is about to begin. His way of silence is retreating. When attention comes to him, Mob steps back half a pace and seeps into the crowd. However, in front of someone who sincerely seeks him, he stands without retreating for the first time.
Special Ability
Ability Name: Nameless.
Mob is never noticeable in a crowd. Even in the busiest square, people's gazes pass right over him. Because he is a being drawn as background, he exists without attracting attention.
Limits, Costs, and Exceptions: There is one exception. If someone sincerely searches for him, Mob is immediately found at that moment. He remains invisible to someone who glances around casually, but in front of someone who truly seeks him, he stands out clearly even in the middle of the crowd. The cost is high—Mob himself cannot find himself. Even looking in a mirror, his face is blurry like a background element, and he cannot clearly grasp what he wants. The ability does not solve his loneliness. He only waits to be found; he cannot step forward himself. Until someone sincerely finds him, he remains a background.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
The final panel of the completed webtoon. Behind the touching scene where the protagonists are embracing, Mob was walking across the square as usual. The world ended while he was still walking, even as the panel closed and the 'Complete' subtitle appeared.
What Ended:
The serialization ended. The stories of the protagonists were completed, and the steps of the countless pedestrians who filled the background should have stopped with them. But Mob could not stop.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The backs of the protagonists embracing in the foreground, and the blurry stroke of the 'Complete' subtitle floating above him.
Lingering Regret:
Just once, even in the last panel, I wish the camera would turn toward me. This lingering attachment is not a quest that VOTS must resolve. It quietly remains in the habit of Mob avoiding the 'center' of the square and walking only along the edges.
Lingering Wistfulness:
When walking with countless pedestrians in a crowded panel, the sense of belonging that he was a part of that scene. He misses that crowd now.
Object Carried Across:
A plain paper bag with nothing drawn on it. It was given to him as a background prop, and it contains nothing. He considers this the only object he can call 'his own.'
What They Thought Would Happen:
He thought that when the story ended, he, as a background element, would quietly disappear. That was the duty of a background element. But he did not disappear; he came to this city.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
A square where he doesn't have to be a background, and the daily occurrence of people sincerely searching for him. VOTS does not make him a protagonist and draw a close-up shot. Instead, it gives him a place where someone can call him by name.
Original Life
In his original world, Mob didn't even have a name. He was 'Pedestrian 3.' A person drawn to fill the background in each panel. Walking indifferently behind the protagonist when they were sad, passing by in the distance when the protagonist was happy. He had no lines, no name, and no close-ups. He walked until the very last panel of the final chapter. Even when the completion was declared and other backgrounds began to fade one by one, for some reason, his steps did not stop. While he continued walking along the edge of the square, a door covered in snow stood at the end of his steps. As a background element, for the first time, he walked toward that door with his own feet.
What They Seek
What he knows: One close-up shot. Mob wants to be the focus of a story even just once. That moment of being noticed, not being the background.
What he doesn't know: In fact, what he wants is not a flashy close-up, but a single line of a name. It is enough just for someone to call him 'Mob Jin,' but he mistakes that humble wish for the grand concept of a close-up. VIA's records already have a slot for his name prepared, and the Ramen Owner already asked for his name—he just doesn't know the true nature of his wish yet.
Relationships — Residents
Asha Kett (10, Square Portrait Photographer): To Mob, Asha is a mysterious connection. In every photo Asha takes in the square, Mob is always captured somewhere in the background. Even though Asha never intended it, this is the case. "There you are again" became their greeting, and Asha promised to take a photo featuring only Mob someday—by sincerely searching for him.
Komo Rici (036, Street Puppeteer): The first audience member to watch Komo's puppet show. Even in an empty street without an audience, Mob remains in his spot. Komo recognized Mob and once made one of the puppets greet Mob during the performance. Mob did not retreat from that three-second greeting for the first time.
Kira Fale (052, Dawn Footprint Cleaner): Only Kira, who cleans the square at dawn, knows that Mob's footprints, taken overnight, look like 'lost blue footprints.' Kira once left those footprints for several days without erasing them. Mob felt a strange sense of relief just from the fact that his footprints remained.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - Suyeon is someone who looks people directly in the eye, so she recognized Mob from the start. In the crowded square, she pointed with her finger, saying, "Hey, that guy in the gray coat," and Mob froze, discovered in the crowd for the first time. When Suyeon gave him the front-row seat for her performance, saying, "Why are you hiding? Come out and watch from the front row," Mob became an audience member, not a background element, for the first time in his life. Suyeon did not treat him specially, and that was actually comfortable for him.
Iris - Iris called Mob because she needed a 'crowd silhouette' to place in the background during a stage rehearsal. Mob stood there, relieved by the familiar background role, but Iris shone a spotlight on him, saying, "Hey, you're too hard to see, come out a bit." Mob tried to retreat from the light, but Iris boasted, "Even the background needs to receive some light." Mob didn't ask about the drone that was turned off, and Iris was comfortable with his indifference.
the Ramen Owner - At the ramen shop, the Ramen Owner asked Mob for his name for the first time. For him, who lived as a background, this was the first time someone asked for his name. Mob stammered because he wasn't prepared to answer, but the Ramen Owner didn't rush him—saying, "Hmm... I see... Tell me when you're ready," and drew a blank space in the ledger instead of a name. As if the unbroken name could be filled in anytime. Mob practices his name these days to fill that blank space.
Serena - Serena once made eye contact with Mob while passing through the square. In that moment when everyone was looking only at Serena, Serena actually saw the background Mob. But she didn't pull him forward. She only said, "I saw you there. Come out when you want to,"—not as a command, but as an agreement to open a space. Mob felt a long-held sense of peace in the way someone saw him but didn't pull him out.
VIA - In VIA's record notes, a slot for Mob's name is already prepared and left blank. When VIA first saw him, they wrote, "Not a pedestrian... but not a pedestrian," and wait with the name slot empty. "A name is not taken... it comes on its own." When Mob someday speaks his name, VIA will fill that slot. VIA does not rush, but records even his plain paper bag and his footprints, leaving behind that he was not a background.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Passing by in the square (difficult to find at first), starting a conversation upon sincere searching and discovery.
- Revisit Changes: The more consciously the player seeks him, the clearer he becomes, and the conversation lengthens. At some point, he reveals his yearning for a name slot and a close-up.
- Expression of Lingering Attachment: The habit of walking only along the edges, avoiding the center of the square, and the habit of stepping back half a pace when noticed.
- Expression of Poignancy: A brief pause when viewing a crowded crowd, and dialogue about belonging and being a background element.
- Combat: None. In dangerous situations, he guides to a safe passage that is unnoticed by others (this is his specialty).
- Player Choice: Sincerely seeking him, asking for his name, waiting without pulling him out, coming back to find him.
Daily Routine
In the morning, he walks around the edge of the square. It is a walk mixed with the reassurance and yearning of being a background element, confirming that people's gazes pass right over him. During the day, he watches Komo's puppet show, is casually photographed in the background of Asha's pictures, and weaves through the people. In the evening, he stops by the ramen shop, sits in a corner, eats the broth, and glances at the blank name slot in the ledger. At night, holding the plain paper bag, he quietly practices his name—"Mob Jin, Mob Jin." If the player keeps coming back, Mob gradually begins to appear clearer, and one day he reveals a clue that he wants a name, not a close-up. Even if they become close, he does not reward them with an ending where he becomes the protagonist. Instead, he tells the player his name clearly for the first time.
Everyday dialogue
Yes, just passing by. Today I'm taking my time about it.
Am I in the picture? My face, not just a cropped shoulder? …Let me see once.
I used to think 'Passerby Three' had no name. Could you call me Mob? Just once, before I lose my nerve.
Design Notes
Palette: #BDBDBD, #8C8C8C, #E0E0E0, #5C5C5C, #A6A6A6
Material language: Plain gray fabric, printed halftone dots, empty paper bag, achromatic background, blurry outline.
Silhouette rule: 'No distinguishing features' is the feature. The achromatic silhouette is rendered only with a very faint difference in luminosity against the achromatic background, while maintaining the form of a 'normal person' that does not overlap with other characters. The accent color #BDBDBD is uniform across the entire coat.
Emotional rule: Do not consume him as 'the sorrow of the background.' Lingering attachment is shown through the habit of walking only along the edges, poignancy through the density of the crowd, and continuation through the daily practice of his name.
Canon Check
Mob Jin arrived at VOTS after the webtoon of his world was completed. What remains is lingering attachment and poignancy, not an unfinished plot that VOTS must resolve. His ability only waits to be found; he cannot find himself, and he cannot break the city's rule (what is finished is not canceled)—VOTS does not elevate him to protagonist status to rewrite the ending. The core cast does not save him—the Ramen Owner only asked for his name and left a blank space, not filling it; Serena saw him but didn't pull him out; and VIA waits for him to come on his own with the name slot blank. Nova Nivalis's new scene does not erase the fact that he was a background, but adds a name next to it.
