Core Premise

Bran Kol arrived in Nova Nivalis after living out the story of his own world. He did not come to solve an unfinished incident; rather, he flowed into this city with hands and eyes that witnessed the morning after the last ember died out. VOTS is not a room of judgment, nor is it a place that forcibly removes fear. What continues here is not a grand destiny, but small lives that can be chosen again—the smoke from a single chimney, the water filled in the fire cistern, the scent that lets you guess the evening meal. Bran watches over that life from atop the chimney.

Identity

Bran Kol lives on Old Belltower Lane as a fire cistern keeper and chimney sweeper. As the winter city has more hearths and fireplaces, his work increases. He climbs up and down the roofs, scraping soot from chimneys, and checks if the fire cisterns placed in every alley are filled with water. It is like someone who fears fire working near it. He can guard someone else's fire, but he does not try to carry someone else's fear for them. He simply stops by houses that worry him one more time.

Visual Profile

Short, curly, dark brown hair covered in soot. Even after washing, a faint gray tint remains from the soot. He always wears red suspenders, making him the only noticeable color atop the roofs. When he smiles, his white teeth stand out against his soot-stained face. He carries a long chimney brush over his shoulder, and a metal scoop for scraping soot and a hook for the watering can hang from his waist. There are faint old burn scars on his hands and forearms. His clothes are thick canvas workwear with a fireproof apron. His signature items are the chimney brush, the red suspenders, and the smile revealing his soot-stained white teeth. The core of his silhouette is the chimney brush on his shoulder—red suspenders—and his sooty face; a single point of color informs even a small sprite that he is 'the man of fire and chimney.'

Personality

On the surface, Bran is a cheerful and good-natured man. He greets people loudly from the rooftops, makes jokes by guessing a house's evening menu from the chimney smoke, and chats with them. However, deep inside, he harbors a profound fear of fire. He saw the world end in a massive conflagration, and that made him afraid of fire. Ironically, this is why he cannot leave the vicinity of fire—he needs to watch the fire to feel at ease. His flaw is excessive worry. He visits houses with even a slight odd smell multiple times, bothering the owners, and checks the fire cistern's water more often than necessary. Yet, he smiles every day. To prevent being consumed by fear, he deliberately laughs louder and jokes more often.

Speech Pattern

Loud, cheerful, mixed casual and polite speech. His voice is loud because he is accustomed to shouting down from the rooftops. Frequent phrases: "Kimchi stew tonight, right? The smell gives it away!", "Let's check if there's water.", "I came again because I was worried, haha.", "You have to be afraid of fire to get close to it.", "Chimneys get angry when they get blocked.". His habit is sniffing the air and guessing the evening menu. His way of silence is gazing into the fire cistern. When asked a difficult question—about the great fire—Bran stops laughing, quietly looks into the hydrant, and only resumes speaking after confirming the water level is adequate.

Special Ability

Ability Name: Smoke Reading.
Bran can guess a house's evening menu and general mood by the smell of smoke rising from the chimney. Whether it's kimchi stew or grilled fish, whether the house is harmonious or heavy that day—his nose reads what the smoke carries. He stops by houses with worrying smells, or houses where the fire energy is precarious or the air is heavy.
Limitations and Cost: He cannot read his own chimney. Bran lives alone, and because he fears fire, he rarely lights a fire in his own home. Therefore, no smoke rises from his chimney, and there is nothing to read. He knows everyone else's dinner but eats his own cold. Furthermore, this ability only reads smells; it does not predict whether a fire will occur—even if he stops by a worrying house again, there is no disaster he can prevent. The ability does not resolve his fear. It only allows him to look a little more often.

The End Of Their World

Last Scene:
After the last night when the great fire swallowed the entire city, Bran stood alone on the ashes, watching the last ember die out. At the moment the morning sun shone upon the ash, the world ended.

What Ended:
The city swallowed by fire ended. The fire department, the houses to be protected, and the alleys where Bran carried water all turned to ash.

Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
A single wisp of smoke rising from the ashes, and the cold morning sun rising above it.

Lingering Regret:
If only he had filled the fire cistern's water a little more before the fire spread. One alley where the water was insufficient remains in his heart like ash. This lingering feeling is not a quest that VOTS must resolve. It quietly remains as Bran's habit of checking the fire cistern's water too often.

Lingering Wistfulness:
The smell of the smoke from cooking rice that peacefully rose from the chimneys in the alleys every evening before the fire.

Object Carried Across:
A scorched fire department whistle. It was used to signal fires in the old world, but now he keeps it in his pocket without blowing it aloud.

What They Thought Would Happen:
He believed that when the fire went out, people would return and rebuild their homes. But only ash remained, and there was no one to return.

What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
A winter city where hearths and fireplaces burn peacefully, and the work of sweeping chimneys and filling fire cisterns. VOTS does not restore the burned city. Instead, it gives Bran a place where he can smile near the fire, even while being afraid of it.

Original Life

In his original world, Bran was a firefighter. He carried water, put out fires, and evacuated people. His city was densely packed with wooden buildings, always at risk of fire. On his last day, an uncontrollable great fire swallowed the city. Bran carried water all night, but the flames were larger than what he could protect. When the last ember died out at dawn, all that remained was ash. He stood on the ashes to greet the morning, knowing there was no fire left to tend and no home left to protect. As he stood holding a scorched whistle in his hand, a single snowflake fell onto the ash.

What They Seek

What he knows: To become someone who does not fear, but loves fire. Bran hopes that someday he can enjoy the warmth in front of a hearth or fireplace without fear.
What he does not know: That he is already smiling in front of hearths and fireplaces. When inspecting the hearth at the ramen shop, when smelling the smoke from the alley's fireplace, his face is already closer to warmth than to fear. Even as he smells the evidence every day, he does not admit that he has begun to like fire a little.

Relationships — Residents

Mera Canto (01, String Instrument Repair/Teahouse Assistant): Bran handles the chimney sweeping for the teahouse. Mera's teahouse always has a faint fire burning, and when Bran passes that chimney, he accurately guesses, "It smells like jujube tea today." They are old neighbors on Belltower Lane; the quiet Mera and the talkative Bran surprisingly get along well.
Tanji Ro (027, Bathhouse Fire Tender Apprentice): A mentor to a child who handles fire. To Tanji, who manages to light the first ember in wet firewood, Bran teaches him how to handle fire without being afraid—"Love fire, but don't be careless." Tanji respects Bran, and Bran learns from Tanji the sight of a child facing fire without fear.
Kaan Bur (117, Bonfire Storyteller): A bonfire enthusiast. Sincerity comes out first near Kaan's bonfire, and it is only in front of that fire that Bran cautiously brings up stories of the great fire. As one who fears fire and one who loves fire, they learn about each other's feelings from each other.

Suyeon - Bran was extremely wary of the meteor flare at the finale of Suyeon's performance. He checked the fire cisterns around the venue three times, and Suyeon laughed, saying, "Uncle, it's not dangerous, it's magic." When Bran remained worried, Suyeon said, "Then you watch from the side, Uncle, so I can feel most at ease." Since then, Bran volunteers to be in charge of fire safety next to the stage every time Suyeon performs, and Suyeon can shoot her flames with peace of mind thanks to him.
Iris - Bran once mistook the light from Iris's drone for a fire and rushed over with water. Iris was bewildered, saying, "Hey, this isn't fire, it's an LED!" but softened her attitude upon seeing Bran's sincere concern. Iris boasted, "Since you care, I'll let you know before the performance." Regarding one extinguished drone, Bran did not ask, "Why isn't that one lighting up?"—he just let it go.
the Ramen Owner - Bran is the regular inspector of the hearth at the ramen shop. He checks if the hearth boiling the broth is safe and scrapes the soot from the chimney. Even when the Ramen Owner sees Bran looking at the hearth unusually often, he doesn't judge—he just writes in the ledger as he sees it: 'Bran, hearth safe today.' After the inspection, the Ramen Owner warms the broth, and Bran smiles most comfortably in front of that hearth.
Serena - When Serena was establishing the city's fire regulations, she asked Bran for his 'consent.' "We're trying to create a rule about placing fire cisterns in every alley, what do you think?" Serena didn't establish the rule by command; she first asked for the consent of someone who knew about fire. Bran spoke about his experience with the great fire for the first time in a calm manner in response to that question, and Serena heard it as a story, not a rule. The city's fire cisterns were thus placed with the consent of the two of them.
VIA - VIA recorded Bran's fire cisterns as 'the water prepared most quietly in the city.' "Water filled with the hope that it won't be used... it is being filled." When Bran asked, "Isn't it pointless if it's never used?" VIA shook its head—"It is not pointless... it is reassurance." VIA even records the chimney smoke Bran observes from the rooftops. Bran first confirmed in VIA's records that his worries were not in vain.

Gameplay Use

- Basic Interaction: Watching chimney sweeping, guessing the evening menu, checking fire cistern's water together.
- Revisit Changes: Upon repeated visits, Bran remembers the smell of the player's house (or frequent location) and asks about their well-being, and one day, he reveals a piece of information about the great fire. If you tease his worries, he covers it with a smile; if you listen, he briefly shows his scorched whistle.
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: The habit of checking the fire cistern's water more than necessary, the habit of not lighting a fire in his own home.
- Expression of Poignancy: A brief pause when smelling the peaceful chimney smoke, sensory dialogue about the smoke from cooking rice.
- Combat: None. In dangerous situations, he guides with water, evacuation routes, and paths where the fire won't spread.
- Player Choice: Requesting chimney cleaning, playing the guessing game of the evening smell, not pressing him about the great fire, visiting again.

Daily Routine

In the morning, he checks the fire cisterns in the alleys to see if they are filled with water. This check is a compulsion and a reassurance, a ritual separating the last morning of the old world from the present. During the day, he climbs up and down the roofs to clean chimneys and guesses the evening meals of each house by the smell of the smoke. He stops by houses with worrying smells one more time. In the evening, he checks the hearth at the ramen shop and smiles most comfortably. At night, he eats a cold dinner without lighting a fire in his own home—his chimney emits no smoke. If you visit him repeatedly, the fear behind Bran's big laugh starts to show, and one day, he might be seen enjoying the warmth in front of a hearth without realizing it. Even if you become very close, he does not reward you with an ending where his fear disappears. Instead, he might ask you to light a small fire in his own home for the first time.

Bran Kol arrived in VOTS after the great fire of his world ended. What remains is lingering feeling and poignancy, not an unfinished plot for VOTS to resolve. His ability only reads the smell of smoke; it cannot predict or prevent disaster, nor can it break the city's rules (what is finished is not canceled). The core cast does not save him—the Ramen Owner records only what he sees without judgment, Serena established the fire rules through consent, not command, and VIA only recorded his fire cisterns without removing his fear. Nova Nivalis's new scene does not erase the memory of the great fire but attaches peaceful chimney smoke beside it.
