Before coming to Nova Nivalis, this person lived out the story of her own world to the very end. She did not come to solve an unfinished incident, but rather because the sense and direction of relationships remained even after the final scene, arriving in this city of ice. VOTS is not an afterlife or a court of judgment, nor is it a place that forcibly melts what has frozen. What continues here is not a grand destiny, but a bowl of broth, footprints circling on the ice, a line in a record, a small life that can be chosen again, like waiting. Ner Ake is someone who saw the moment the world completely froze with her own eyes, and she did not come to cancel that fact, but to choose how to live with the ice.
Identity
Ner Ake lives as a guardian of the frozen lake in the outskirts. Guarding it does not mean she prevents anyone from entering. She marks where the thickness of the ice changes, records the cracks that appear overnight, and quietly tells those who come fishing where it is dangerous. Her cabin is the last place to have its light on by the lakeside, serving as a landmark for those who are lost and need to check their direction. She does not bring up her own story first, nor does she pry into others' stories. She works, observes the ice, and returns to her cabin. This repetition is not an extension of tragedy for her, but the shape of a day.
Visual Profile
Hair: Pale gray straight long hair, close to achromatic, with a bluish tint like ice at the tips. It is rarely tied up, swaying slowly in the wind.
Eyes: Hazy silver-gray eyes, always covered with a thin layer of frost at the tips of her eyelashes, causing frost to sparkle when she blinks.
Skin/Build: Pale and seemingly cold skin, a medium build that is neither thin nor robust. Her movements are slow and unembellished.
Signature Attire: A slate-blue cloak, as if draped over the old blanket of the lakeside cabin. Inside, she wears a thick knit and waterproof gaiters.
Signature Props: A long brass awl for measuring ice thickness, a bundle of red string for marking, an old thermos that emits no steam.
Silhouette Key: The trailing hem of the cloak, the long awl slung diagonally over her shoulder, the red string wrapped around her feet. The accent color #9FB4C7 is carried in the cloak and the tips of her hair, making her read as a 'cold and slow guardian' even in small sprites. Her attire is not heroic gear, but the cold-weather clothing of someone who survived the last night the world froze.
Personality
On the surface, she appears cold due to her slow speech and lack of facial expression. Inside, she is close to the opposite. When marking dangerous ice, she measures the thickness several times; when a stranger walks onto the lake, instead of shouting, she stands in their way. She is not indifferent, just doesn't show her emotions outwardly. She has flaws. She delays decisions excessively. The habit of waiting until the ice melts is ingrained in her, causing her to postpone even what she should say, saying, 'Let's watch a little longer.' Because of this, there are times she misses what she wanted to say, and she knows it herself. She is not someone who never smiles. When the broth is hot, when the ice cracks with a beautiful sound, or when the red string sways in the wind, the corners of her mouth curve just a little.
Speech Pattern
She draws out the ends of her sentences and pauses for a beat between phrases. She cannot speak hastily.
Common Phrases:
- "...Let's watch just a little longer."
- "It's still thin there. Come this way."
- "What's underneath is underneath."
- "It's hot. ...After a long time."
- "Even if it doesn't melt, you can live."
Mannerism: She does not immediately respond to what others say; instead, she looks down at the ice once before answering. Her silence is not avoidance, but observation. Often, she substitutes words with the gesture of tying another piece of red string instead of answering.
Special Ability
Name: Reading Beneath the Ice.
What it can do: By looking beneath the ice of the frozen lake, she can see residual images of 'finished stories' submerged under the water. Lost scenes, swallowed voices, or the shapes of sunken objects shimmer faintly through the ice.
Limit/Cost: She can see, but she cannot retrieve. Even if she puts her hand in, the residual images scatter, and if she breaks the ice, there is only black water underneath. If she stares too long, her breath turns to frost and covers her vision, causing her sense of time to blur, making half a day pass in an instant. The difficulty in looking away is also a cost.
Reason for Not Solving Problems: This ability cannot reverse what has sunk. It cannot retrieve anyone's lingering regrets, nor can it pull the stories from beneath the ice into the present. All she can do is watch and observe, 'It is there.' And that observation is the guardian's duty. This ability cannot break the city's rule—that what is finished is not canceled.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
She saw the moment the last water of the world froze by the lakeside. The ripples spread halfway and then stopped, as if frozen into glass.
What Ended:
Her world slowly froze entirely. The river, the sea, and finally this lake froze, and with it, the world's time stopped.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The back of a child skipping stones in the middle of the lake just before it froze. The stone skipped three times and lodged in the ice on the fourth.
Lingering Regret:
She swallowed the words she was about to say to the child, "Let's go in now." While thinking, 'Let's watch just a little longer,' the water froze. This regret is not a quest that must be resolved in VOTS. It quietly remains in her slow speech and habit of delaying decisions, within the scope of speaking only when Ner Ake wishes, and not changing another person's choice.
Lingering Wistfulness:
The light that was last trembling beneath the surface just before the water completely froze. The temperature of that brief moment when the water was still water.
Object Carried Across:
That skipping stone that lodged in the ice on the fourth skip. She now carries it in a pocket next to her thermos.
What They Thought Would Happen After the Ending:
She believed that when spring came and the ice melted, the stopped ripples would continue to spread. Spring did not come, and the ice ended with her world.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
A place where one can live on the ice without waiting for it to melt. A bowl of hot broth, the hand that entrusts the lake's records, and neighbors who do not ask her to look beneath the ice for them. VOTS does not cancel the fact that her world froze. Instead, it gives her a space where she can live even though it is finished.
Original Life
Originally, she was a guardian who watched over the lake every season when the ice thinned. She would tie red strings at dangerous spots while watching the villagers cross the ice to the market and children skipping stones on the water. In the last winter when the world began to freeze, she welcomed the thickening ice. Because thick meant safe. But the thickness kept increasing until the water disappeared, and on the last day, she sat by the lakeside and watched the world solidify like glass until the end. She could have run away, but she felt the guardian must watch the lake until the end. That was the only responsibility she knew.
What They Seek
What she outwardly seeks: A life that does not wait for melting. A way to live the day even while frozen, without clinging to the hope that spring will come someday.
What she needs to find, though she doesn't know it: The fact that she is already living on the ice. She has not yet acknowledged herself that the present—drinking broth on the ice, leaving records, and exchanging a few words with neighbors—is already a 'life that doesn't need to melt,' rather than waiting for spring.
Relationships — Residents
Nima Afterglow (20, Light Collector): Two observers watching things disappear in the outskirts. Nima watches the fading light, and Ner watches the sinking stories. They often sit side-by-side in silence. "What did you see today?" is the only greeting between them.
Pet Janson (45, Waterway Ice Fisherman): The day he came to ask if he could fish in the lake, Ner replied, "Only catch what wants to be caught." Pet was surprised that the words accurately described his ability. Since then, he fishes after confirming the dangerous ice spots with Ner.
Yue Ran (120, Person Waiting for the Last Snowflake): They are silent comrades in that they are both 'waiting people.' Yue Ran waits for the last snowflake, and Ner waits for a spring that won't melt. Sometimes they sit side-by-side by the lake, pretending to wait for nothing.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - The only person whose proposal to break the ice with a tap was politely refused. One day, when Suyeon offered to split the lake in half with an ice sword to create a waterway, Ner stopped her, saying, "What's underneath is underneath." Suyeon grumbled, not understanding, but Suyeon was also the first to grab her arm when Ner almost slipped on the ice. Since that day, Suyeon does not draw her sword when coming to the lake.
Iris - Iris once briefly placed a drone that had powered down onto the lake to take a picture. Ner stared at the shadow of that drone reflected beneath the ice for a long time but asked nothing. Iris finds that silence comfortable, and afterward, when tired from stage preparations, she comes and sits by the lake without a word. The two spend an hour without conversation before parting.
the Ramen Owner - The broth of ramyeon is the only thing Ner feels is 'hot' in this city. When she catches steam with her frosted eyelashes, her vision blurs momentarily, and she likes that blur. The Ramen Owner asks nothing and simply pours a little more broth into her bowl. When she says, "It's hot... after a long time," the owner writes that down in the ledger, "Hmm... I see...".
Serena - Serena walked all the way to the outskirts lake and granted the guardian's cabin not as a 'permission,' but as an 'agreement.' She asked, "Can you watch here?" and when Ner nodded, that was it. There was no command. Serena sometimes passes by the cabin on a snowy day and only asks, "How is the ice?"
VIA - VIA entrusted the entire record of the lake to Ner. Leaving behind an old ledger, VIA said, "The lake needs someone to watch it... it must have someone."
Ner records the cracks and thickness of the ice in that ledger every day. VIA sometimes comes, reads the newly written lines, and leaves, saying, "It froze well... it has frozen." They do not take it away; they only leave the record.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Providing ice safety information, requesting red string markings, short daily conversations.
- Revisit Changes: On the first visit, she only informs about dangerous ice; on subsequent visits, she speaks about what is reflected beneath the ice, piece by piece. However, she never retrieves anything.
- Expressing Lingering Regret: A speech pattern that delays decisions, a beat of silence before answering, the habit of fiddling with skipping stones.
- Expressing Wistfulness: Sensory dialogue about the light and temperature just before the water freezes, a momentary softening of expression in the steam of the broth.
- Relationship Reward: Not a new item, but the quiet place of the lake and a piece of the story only heard there.
- Combat: None. Even before dangerous ice, she does not fight; she stands in front of it and waits.
- Player Choice: Whether to cross the ice, sit beside her and wait, or share a bowl of broth.
Daily Routine
In the morning, she walks along the cracks that formed overnight and re-ties the red strings. During the day, she sits in front of her cabin, looking down at the ice and filling out her ledger. If a fisherman or a lost person comes, she tells them the dangerous spots. In the evening, walking to the ramyeon alley to drink a bowl of broth is the only 'heat' of her day. At night, she lights the cabin fire, places the skipping stones next to the thermos, and sleeps. For players who revisit, her words become slightly longer, but no matter how close they become, she never breaks the ice to pull something out.
Everyday dialogue
A little farther back… Even if I speak slowly, move your feet quickly.
Don't test the ice with your heel. My heart will crack first.
I should have said, 'Let's go inside.' Those unsaid words still catch in my mouth.
Design Notes
Palette: #9FB4C7, #6B7C93, #D8E4EC, #3A4654, #C0443B
(#9FB4C7 is the Masterplan designated point color—cloak and hair tips. #C0443B is the accent for the red marking string.)
Material language: Frozen water, frosted glass, old waterproof blanket, brass, wet string.
Silhouette rule: The trailing hem of the cloak, the long awl on the shoulder, and the red string at the feet must be read as separate elements and not overlap with other characters.
Emotional rule: It is not concluded with a single tragic expression. Lingering regret is shown through delayed words and fiddling stones; wistfulness is shown through the warmth of the broth's steam; continuation is shown through the daily ice records.
Canon Check
Ner Ake arrived in VOTS after her own world completely froze and ended. What remains is lingering regret and wistfulness, not an unfinished plot that VOTS must melt away. Her ability cannot retrieve what has sunk, and the core cast cannot retrieve it for her. The new scene in Nova Nivalis continues quietly on top of the frozen lake, without erasing it.
