Noche Rim lived through the story of her own world to the very end. She did not come to Nova Nivalis to solve an unfinished incident, but because the sight of the darkness remained even after the last night ended. This city is not the afterlife, nor is it a court of judgment, nor is it a place to forcibly heal wounds. What continues here is not a grand destiny, but a life of choices that can be made again—like lighting a single lantern on the night path, a bowl of late-night steamed eggs, or a brief greeting on a snowy night.
Identity
Noche is a lantern holder at the night market behind Threshold Market. When the sun sets, she walks between the stalls holding a lantern staff as tall as herself, illuminating the path and shining her lantern on those entering dark alleys. Since night is her day, she often dozes off during the bright daytime. She does not consider her work grand, but she knows how much a light means to someone afraid of the night path. Because she knows that fear herself.
Visual Profile
Hair: A short, mini-style hime cut, jet black, with straight bangs and a bob cut abruptly cut at the earlobe.
Eyes: Eyes that glow faintly like a cat in the darkness. She is very embarrassed by these eyes, and when someone looks at her, she covers them with the back of her hand.
Skin/Build: A small, thin body, with faint shadows under her eyes during the day.
Signature Outfit: A black cloak-like outer garment larger than her frame, with only yellow bands on the cuffs to be visible at night.
Signature Props: A lantern staff as tall as herself (with a glass lantern at the top), a small blanket for naps.
Silhouette Core: Lantern staff as tall as her - small body - glowing eyes. The yellow accent (#FFB703) is embedded in the lantern and the cuff bands, allowing her to be read as a 'Night Lantern' even as a small sprite.
Personality
Noche is shy but strong in responsibility. At night, she changes completely; the child who was afraid holds the lantern like an adult reassuring others. Her strengths are kindness and diligence. If someone is scared on the night path, she silently stands in front of them, illuminating their feet. Her flaws are the embarrassment over her eyes and her daytime drowsiness. Even if people say, "Your eyes are pretty," she doesn't believe it and covers her eyes. Still, she is not a depressed child. On nights when the lantern lights up well, she runs between the stalls humming a tune.
Speech Pattern
Her voice is small and cautious. At night, her voice gets a little louder.
Common Phrases:
- "Look at your feet. I'll shine a light for you."
- (Covering her eyes) "You don't have to look... just look ahead."
- "I'm sleepy during the day. Night is real for me."
- "If you're scared, come next to the lantern."
Mannerism: When embarrassed, she hides her face behind the lantern staff. Her way of being silent is staring quietly into the flame of the lantern.
Special Ability
Name: Nighteyes.
What she can do: Even in complete darkness, Noche's eyes shine like a cat, allowing her to see objects clearly. So, even if the lantern goes out, she does not get lost, and children call her a 'little lighthouse.'
Limit/Cost: In the bright daytime, her eyes cannot handle the light, causing her to become drowsy and dim. Noche's true time is night, and the day is a time she endures. Furthermore, she is embarrassed by this ability, and when others look at her eyes, she quickly covers them, unable to boast about her talent.
Why the ability doesn't solve problems: Nighteyes only allows Noche to see the path; it doesn't illuminate others' darkness. So, she shines light for others with her lantern, not her eyes. Every night, she learns that her eyes give sight only to her, and to reassure others, she must ultimately share the light.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
The dawn when the last night, permitted just once in a world of eternal day, ended, at the moment Noche was extinguishing the lanterns of the night market.
What Ended:
In a world where night was forbidden and only eternal day remained, the last permitted night market disappeared with the dawn.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The bright dawn light that flooded in after all the lanterns were extinguished, and the faces of the night merchants blurring in that light.
Lingering Regret:
Extinguishing the light while saying, "It's the rule," to a customer who held onto her and pleaded not to turn it off. This lingering feeling is not a quest that needs to be resolved. It remains in Noche's habit of extinguishing the lantern a beat late when someone holds onto it.
Lingering Wistfulness:
The scene of people's shadows stretching long under the lantern at midnight, when the night market was busiest. The scent of those shadows (oil and snacks).
Object Carried Across:
A piece of wick from the last extinguished night market lantern. This wick is now inside the lantern of her lantern staff.
What They Thought Would Happen:
They believed the night market would open again someday when night was permitted again. However, the brightening day never ended.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
A night market that doesn't have to go out, and people who are afraid of the night. The city does not cancel her ending. Instead, it gives her night vision she need not be ashamed of, relationships that are present without dominating, and a place where she isn't scolded for extinguishing the lantern a beat late.
Original Life
Noche was the daughter of a night merchant in a world where night was forbidden and only eternal day continued. Her family lit lanterns at the night market, which opened secretly to avoid detection, and from a young age, Noche guided people through the darkness with eyes that could see objects even in the dark. The last day was like this. On the last night, which was permitted just once, the night market was busier than ever. When dawn arrived, Noche extinguished the lanterns one by one. One customer held onto her, saying, "Just a little longer," but she turned off the light according to the rules, and the dawn light erased all shadows.
What They Seek
What Noche seeks on the surface: night vision she need not be ashamed of. She wishes for a day when she doesn't have to hide her glowing eyes, even if others say they are pretty.
What she doesn't know she needs to find: That there are people in the night market waiting for those eyes. The children of the night path and the merchants who work late already call her eyes a 'lighthouse' and wait for her. She still doesn't know that the eyes she hides out of shyness bring reassurance to others.
Relationships — Residents
Voss Doorley (19, Threshold Keeper · the outskirts): An adult who guards the boundary of the night. When Noche walks the night path, Voss watches from afar, and Noche waves her lantern once every time she passes in front of Voss's post. Voss acknowledges, "At night, you see better than me."
Vezim Nol (58, Night Market Antique Dealer): Noche's employer. Vezim, who has eyes that change from amber during the day to blue at night, is the only adult who subtly told Noche, who was embarrassed by her Nighteyes, "It's not shameful to only be seen at night." He chose an antique lantern for Noche.
Koda Mim (73, Inn Bellboy Apprentice · 12 years old): A friend whose day and night are opposite. Koda works when Noche sleeps during the day, and Noche works when Koda sleeps at night. They only meet briefly at dusk and dawn, exchanging stories of what happened that day. "This happened during the day." "This happened at night."
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - Someone who laughs away the fear of the night together.
When Suyeon passed through behind Threshold Market late at night practicing for a night performance, Noche illuminated the path with her lantern. When Suyeon said, "Your eyes are really bright," Noche quickly covered her eyes, but Suyeon replied, "Why cover them? They're cool. I'm someone who scares people when I swing my sword at night too." For the first time that day, Noche delayed covering her eyes by a beat.
Iris - An adult who watches quietly as someone who handles light.
When Iris's drone passed through the night alley, Noche liked placing the drone's light and her lantern light side-by-side. When Iris said, "The lantern is warmer," Noche hid behind the lantern, embarrassed. Iris is grateful that Noche didn't ask about one of the extinguished drones, and sometimes leaves a drone light in the night alley.
the Ramen Owner - Someone who feeds her late at night.
Late at night, after the night market work is done, when Noche passes in front of the ramen shop, the Ramen Owner offers her a bowl of late-night steamed eggs without asking anything. He pushes the steaming bowl over, saying, "Hmm... I see... The night work is done..." Noche thinks that steamed egg is the warmest thing of the day. The Ramen Owner has never stared intently at her shy eyes.
Serena - Someone with whom she exchanges brief greetings about the night.
On a snowy night, Serena met Noche at City Hall Steps. Serena said, "Your lantern shines down to the lowest parts of the city." When Noche replied, "Night is my time," Serena did not command but asked, "Then, may I ask for your night?" Noche cherishes that request because it was the first time an adult treated her like one.
VIA - A partner with whom she takes night record walks.
VIA and Noche walk through the city side-by-side at night. When VIA records something trivial, Noche illuminates that spot with her lantern. "There is a tear stain here... it is there." "Let me shine a light for you." VIA never takes Noche anywhere. Instead, VIA quietly records things that Noche saw with her Nighteyes but was too shy to say.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Guiding the night path, illuminating stalls, short night market conversations (active only at night).
- Revisit Change: Initially shy and covering her eyes, with repeated visits, she stops covering her eyes and makes room next to the lantern.
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: The habit of extinguishing the lantern a beat late when someone holds onto it, and daytime drowsiness.
- Expression of Poignancy: Pausing briefly when seeing the long shadow stretching under the lantern around midnight.
- Relationship Reward: Not a new item, but the reassurance that the player's night path is always brightly guided.
- Combat: None. On dangerous nights, she does not fight but illuminates a safe path with her lantern.
Daily Routine
During the day, she dozes off under a blanket in a corner of the stall. This drowsiness is not laziness but the way her Nighteyes endure the day. At dusk, she meets Koda Mim briefly to hear about the day, and when night comes, she wakes up completely and holds her lantern staff. At midnight, when the night market is busiest, the shadows of the old night market rise up. In the early morning, she extinguishes the lanterns one by one, but if someone holds onto her, she extinguishes it a beat late. For players who revisit, the hand covering her eyes becomes slower, and finally, a night comes when she doesn't cover them.
Everyday dialogue
I'll hold the lamp. You can grip my coat if you're frightened. Just don't tug.
Quiet in daylight? Sunlight talks so much I hardly get a turn.
If you ask for a little more light… I'll hear you before putting it out. Before mentioning the rules.
Design Notes
Palette: #FFB703, #FFD98A, #2A2438, #6B5E7A, #C24B3A
Material language: Black cloak fabric, glass lantern, warm lantern light, nap blanket, old wick.
Silhouette rule: The lantern staff as tall as her - small body - glowing eyes must be read as separate elements. To avoid overlapping with other child characters (Koda Mim, Nuri On, etc.), Noche uses a 'vertical staff as tall as herself' as her unique silhouette axis.
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are expressed through the hand that extinguishes the lantern late and daytime drowsiness; poignancy is expressed through the long shadow at midnight; continuation is expressed by the lantern lit every night. Her shy eyes are drawn not as a flaw but as a mark of kindness.
Canon Check
Noche Rim arrived in VOTS after the story of her world ended. What remains is the sight of the darkness and the lingering feeling for the last extinguished lantern, not an unfinished plot for the city to resolve. Her eternal day is not canceled. The new scenes of Nova Nivalis continue by connecting the lantern lit next to the extinguished one. The Core Five do not solve her problems for her. The Ramen Owner gives steamed eggs without judgment, Serena asks instead of commanding, and VIA only records the night she saw without taking her anywhere.
