Paya Jin arrived at Nova Nivalis after the story of her own world ended with dry earth. She did not come to retrieve a seed she failed to protect, but rather because the habit of touching the seeds left in her hand after the final sealing ceremony, and her feelings for people, drew her to this city. This is not a afterlife, nor is it a place that judges a child's mistakes. What continues here is not a grand narrative, but a life of listening to the sound of seeds shaking, sorting them into envelopes, and learning alongside the greenhouse adults. Paya does not try to erase the fact that her world withered and died. She has simply been able to use the hands that once touched seeds in the greenhouse today.
Identity
In the greenhouse of Glass-Lantern Greenhouse Lane, Paya works as a seed sorting apprentice. She sorts the seeds brought in by the adults by type, placing them in envelopes, separating those that will germinate from those that will remain dormant. It is a child's job, but it is necessary labor for the greenhouse—misclassifying a seed means losing an entire season. Paya takes her duties seriously, mimicking the adults and carrying a magnifying glass around her neck. However, she has one seed that she has not told anyone about. She cannot shake that seed, which she secretly brought from the dry world—she does not yet have the courage to hear what sound is inside it.
Visual Profile
Hair: Dark brown hair, tied in short, low pigtails. Stray hairs stick out, and there is always a little dirt on her cheeks.
Eyes: Large, serious black eyes. She tilts her head to one side when listening to the sound of seeds.
Skin/Build: A small body tanned by the sun, with dirt smudges on her knees. Dirt is stuck under her fingernails.
Signature Outfit: Loose work apron over overalls with seed envelopes sticking out of the pockets, and a magnifying glass necklace around her neck.
Signature Props: A handful of seed envelopes to shake and listen to, and one old seed that she never shows anyone (in the innermost pocket).
Silhouette Key: Dirt-smudged cheeks, pockets bulging with seed envelopes, and the magnifying glass on her neck. The accent color #7CB518 (Sprout Green) is repeated on the apron ties and envelope labels.
Personality
She is spirited, serious, and tries to act mature. She knows much more about seeds than her peers, and her voice gets louder when explaining them. She calls the seeds like people, saying, "This one will sprout, this one will wake." Although she appears capable on the outside, she harbors guilt about the seed she brought. She is afraid that it might have been theft, or that if she shakes it, she might discover it is a dormant seed forever. Her flaw is that she cannot accept praise—when told she did well, she preemptively says, "It's not enough yet.". Nevertheless, she becomes a spirited senior to younger children in front of them, even when they are holding watering cans.
Speech Pattern
Clear and fast, mimicking adult speech. Her speech becomes lengthy and excited when seeds are mentioned.
Common Phrases:
- "This one will wake. Listen to the sound, clatter."
- "It's not enough yet. I have to learn more."
- "You shouldn't wake up a dormant one. You have to wait."
- "...I won't shake this one."
Mannerism: The action of holding a seed envelope to her ear and shaking it. When flustered, she fiddles with her magnifying glass.
Way of Silence: When the topic of the seed in the innermost pocket comes up, she closes her mouth and clutches the envelope tightly. That silence means, "This one isn't ready to be told."
Special Ability
Ability Name: Seed-Shake
What it can do: Paya listens to the sound inside the seeds by shaking them, distinguishing between seeds that will germinate ('those who will wake') and seeds that will remain dormant for a long time ('those who will remain dormant'). In the greenhouse, this ear is a true skill that prevents a season of wasted effort.
Limit/Cost: All she knows is whether it will wake or remain dormant; she does not know when it will wake or what it will become. Furthermore, she cannot awaken the seeds—shaking a dormant seed does not hasten its germination. If she shakes one seed too many times, the clattering sound gradually fades, making her hesitant to shake the seed she cherishes most.
Reason for Not Solving Problems: Even if she knows a seed will remain dormant forever, she cannot revive it. She cannot shake the seed from the dry world that she brought because she fears it might be a 'dormant one,' and the ability does not alleviate that fear. Knowing and accepting are different things, and the ability only allows her to know.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
On the day the last field withered due to desertification, the seed repository held a sealing ceremony. While the adults sealed all the remaining seeds, Paya, unnoticed by anyone, grasped one seed and put it in her pocket. Listening to the sound of the seal closing behind her, she stepped out the door, clutching that seed tightly.
What Ended:
The seed repository of the agricultural kingdom, all its seeds, and the season of sowing that returned every year ended together.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The seeds sleeping neatly beyond the sealing glass, and the dry dust settling upon them.
Lingering Regret:
Paya has not yet decided whether bringing that seed was a farewell or theft. That is why she cannot shake it—if it is a 'dormant one,' then what she stole was in vain; if it is one that will 'wake,' then she must find a place to plant it. This lingering feeling remains not as a quest to be resolved, but as her habit of constantly checking her innermost pocket.
Lingering Wistfulness:
The smell of dirt in the seed repository on the night before sowing, and the sound of seeds brushing against each other inside the envelopes. When the dry earth and the rustling of paper envelopes come, she briefly revives.
Object Carried Across:
One dry seed in the innermost pocket, which she has not shaken. She does not yet know if it is dormant or one that will wake.
What They Thought Would Happen:
They believed that the sealed seeds would someday be planted again and the fields would revive. But the seal was never opened, and the fields did not return.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
The greenhouse where new seeds are sorted every day, and the mentors who humor her attempts to act grown-up. The city does not revive her world. Instead, it gives her a place to live alongside the dry world, relationships where she is not underestimated as a child, and a way of nurturing seeds without owning them.
Original Life
A child at a seed repository in an agricultural kingdom that ended in desertification. She carried seeds on errands for the adults, attached envelopes, and assisted with germination tests. As the fields withered one by one, the repository's work increased, and eventually, there was no land left to plant, only seeds to seal. On the last day of the sealing ceremony, the adults were solemn, and the children stood behind them. Just before the sealing glass closed, Paya grasped one seed within reach and put it in her pocket. She doesn't know why. Listening to the sound of the seal closing, she stepped out the door as dust settled.
What They Seek
What she seeks on the surface: Confirmation that bringing the seed was an act of farewell, not theft. She seeks grounds to tell herself that what her hands did was not bad.
What she seeks but doesn't know: That the greenhouse adults already know about the incident but do not scold her. She does not yet know that the secret she believes she is hiding has already been quietly forgiven.
Relationships — Residents
Tessa Wren (Seed and Dried Flower Merchant, Snowflake Market) — Seed mentor. Paya learned how to shake seeds from Tessa, and if she has a confusing envelope, she runs to Snowflake Market. Tessa noticed Paya's innermost pocket but did not ask, instead only telling her, "You don't have to wake up the dormant ones in a hurry."
Prim Howl (Greenhouse Gardener, 33) — Greenhouse caretaker. Prim teaches Paya about condensation on glass and winter germination. If Paya accidentally mixes up envelopes, Prim does not get angry but listens to the sounds with her.
Som Ire (Greenhouse Watering Duty, 64) — Watering partner. When Som sneezes in front of a thirsty pot, Paya checks if the seed in that pot is one that will wake. They are the youngest team in the greenhouse, and they play a game of naming seeds secretly from the adults.
Horo Mimi (Kim Seorim Window Painter, 82) — Greenhouse glass painter. When Horo paints on the condensation of the greenhouse glass, Paya and Som run over before it dries. Paya asks, "Is this one a dormant one too? It disappears so quickly," and Horo smiles.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - A spirited customer who comes to get pots. When Suyeon comes to the window of the ramyeon shop to get two pots, Paya selects seeds for her like an adult, saying, "This one will wake, give it water often." When Suyeon pours water hastily every day, Paya firmly scolds her, "You have to wait for the dormant ones!" Suyeon laughed, defeated by the child for the first time.
Iris - An older sister who lends light. When Iris floated a drone to share light in a dim corner of the greenhouse, Paya was delighted, saying, "There are ones that will wake even in this light." Iris spoke quickly when the topic of fabrication came up, and Paya shook seeds beside her. Paya did not ask about the dead drone.
the Ramen Owner - The person who entrusts pots by the window. Paya is in charge of the pots by the ramyeon shop window. The Ramen Owner only says, "How is it today," every morning and heats the broth. When Paya says, "This one is still dormant," he judges without comment and only records the date the pot was watered in his ledger.
Serena - The founder who granted the greenhouse spot by consent. Paya gained a place to learn in the greenhouse thanks to Serena's 'consent.' Serena did not command Paya to plant anything; instead, she asked, "What do you want to grow?" Paya fiddled with her innermost pocket then, and Serena waited without rushing her.
VIA - The rabbit who knows about the seed removal incident. VIA has already recorded the 'incident' of Paya bringing one seed from the dry world. However, it is kept from everyone else, and VIA leaves only one sentence for Paya: "You brought it... it was a farewell." It neither takes it away nor forces her to shake it, keeping the secret.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Demonstration of seed sound classification, pot consultation, spirited greenhouse guidance.
- Revisit Change: When the player entrusts a pot, the game remembers whether it germinated, but does not force the awakening of dormant seeds. On repeated visits, she subtly shows the seed from her innermost pocket (though she never shakes it).
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: The habit of checking the innermost pocket, the repetition of "I won't shake this one," and the pause while clutching the envelope.
- Expression of Poignancy: Sensory dialogue regarding the smell of dirt, the rustling of envelopes, and the sound of seeds brushing against each other.
- Relationship Reward: Instead of items, the change is connecting the seeds to the right resident.
- Combat: None. Even in dangerous situations, she chooses to protect the seeds and pots or look after the young Som.
Daily Routine
In the morning, she puts on her magnifying glass and checks if the envelopes sorted the day before have been mixed up. During the day, she shakes seeds to classify them, and if confused, she runs to Tessa. In the afternoon, she waters Som and the greenhouse, and checks the pots by the ramyeon shop window. At night, she takes out the seed from the innermost pocket, places it in her palm, and puts it back without shaking it. If the player visits repeatedly, she first boasts about the seed, then shows that there is a seed she cannot shake, and finally, she asks for the first time, "Is this... a dormant one, or one that will wake?"
Everyday dialogue
Sorting in progress! Don't wake tiny seeds with loud voices! …Mine was loudest.
Sleeping seeds aren't dead seeds. Adults keep mixing them up, so I made a chart.
I can't shake this one. If I learn what's inside, then I'll have to decide something.
Design Notes
Palette: #7CB518, #D8E0B0, #4A3B2A, #A9744F, #E0C24A
Material language: Dry seeds, paper envelopes, dirt, magnifying glass glass, greenhouse glass and condensation.
Silhouette rule: The dirt-smudged cheeks - seed envelope pockets - magnifying glass necklace must be read separately, and it must not overlap with the representative form of Som Ire (Watering Duty) in the greenhouse. Som has a large watering can; Paya has seed envelopes and a magnifying glass.
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are shown through checking the innermost pocket, poignancy through the smell of dirt and the sound of seeds, and continuity through daily seed sorting. The child is not used only as a symbol of tragedy—she smiles, boasts, and cares for younger children.
Canon Check
Paya Jin arrived in Nova Nivalis after the story of her world ended. What remains is lingering feelings and poignancy, not dry fields that the city must revive. The Seed-Shake ability cannot awaken dead seeds, memories do not disappear, and the ending is not canceled. The Core Five do not solve her problems for her—the Ramen Owner simply accepts the pots without judgment, Serena grants the spot by consent without commanding what to plant, and VIA keeps the seed removal incident a secret without taking it or exposing it.
