Volga Sten

Core Premise

Volga Sten lived out the story of her own world to the end. That world was one where caravans connected the desert and the roads, and the story ended when trade ceased and the last caravan disbanded, with Volga carrying the last camel's load on her back and completing the journey to the destination. Volga did not come to Nova Nivalis to reopen the lost caravan routes; she arrived because the back and the legs that measured the roads while carrying loads remained. VOTS is not a place to restore dead trade routes, nor is it a place to return the last camel. What continues here is not a grand caravan, but small, manageable daily life—a day's unloading, a single load, a misplaced box, a bowl of broth. The fact that Volga was the last foreman of the porters is treated matter-of-factly.

Identity

Volga leads the porter union in Rainshield Square. When something heavy needs to be moved, people call on Volga and her union members. She divides the loads, sets the rotation, and decides who should carry which load. With her sturdy arms, she takes the lead and carries the heaviest things, but she does it not to show off strength, but to ensure the load reaches its proper home. She does not insist on mentioning her origin—the last porter foreman of a world where the caravans ended—nor does she boast about knowing the remaining distance of the load. She does not judge whether someone else's load is heavy; she simply carries it together. Her union shares the weight of the square every day.

Visual Profile

Her hair is a dark rye gold, braided into a thick, sturdy single braid—unlike the neatly braided honey-colored braids, Volga's braid is thick and firm, tightly secured so it doesn't come undone during work. Her face, tanned by sun and sweat, always has a sweat towel wrapped around her forehead. Her forearms are tough, and her palms are thick with calluses. Her build is large and solid. A wide load strap for carrying goods hangs on her back, and her signature accessory is a thick leather padding on her shoulders, which helps her withstand the pressure of heavy loads on her shoulder blades. The core of her silhouette is the thick single braid, the forehead towel, the load strap on her back, and the leather pad on her shoulders. The accent color is rye gold (#C29B40), repeated on the braided hair, load strap, and the edges of the shoulder pads.

Personality

On the surface, Volga is large and straightforward. Her voice is booming, her laugh is loud, and she does not back down in the face of heavy things. Inside, she is meticulous. She remembers which union member has a bad back, and who is struggling with which load. Flaw: She cannot let others share her own load. While she shares others' burdens well, she carries the heaviest thing on her own back—the memory of completing the last camel's load—alone. Also, while she often tells others, "You can stay," her body always moves toward the next load. She is not a tragic figure. After unloading, she laughs heartily with her union members and shares broth, and when a child struggles to move a small box, she claps her hands and says, "Oh, we have a porter!"

Speech Pattern

Her manner of speaking is loud and straightforward, delivered in short bursts.
Common phrases:

- "Carrying the load isn't everything. A load is only done when it reaches its home."

Special Ability

Ability Name: 'Wayfinder' — The Ruler to Home'.
When Volga carries a load on her back, she knows the 'remaining distance to its home.' She can feel on her back how much further this box must go to reach its owner, how many steps are left. Therefore, she does not waste effort, delivering the load to its exact spot via the shortest route.
Limit and Cost: This ability does not reduce the load's weight in any way. Even knowing the remaining distance, she must walk it herself—knowing is separate from carrying. Furthermore, the 'distance to home' only applies to objects. It does not tell her where a person needs to go, or where she herself should stay. And the sensation disappears once the load is set down, so she only knows while carrying it.
Reason for Not Solving Problems: Knowing the load's way home is different from knowing where she herself should stay. Even while delivering everyone else's loads to their homes, Volga cannot know with her ability what a 'load that is not being carried' is. The ability does not resolve her lingering attachments for her. It only ensures that today's loads are moved without wasted effort.

The End Of Their World

Last Scene:
On the last road where the caravan disbanded, an old camel collapsed, unable to walk anymore. Volga transferred all of that camel's load onto her own back, walked the remaining distance to the destination, and set down the load. Then, she unbuckled the empty load strap from her shoulder.

What Ended:
The world of the caravan ended. The trade routes, the camel procession, and the cities waiting for the loads scattered after the last procession.

Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
Her empty back after setting down all the loads, and the eyes of the old camel looking up at Volga as it collapsed.

Lingering Regret:
She does not regret carrying the camel's load instead, but leaving the camel behind still weighs on her. A wish that cannot be fulfilled remains: "I should have carried the camel instead of the load."
This lingering attachment is not a quest. It remains only as the habit of standing bent over for a moment even after setting down the heavy load.

Lingering Wistfulness:
The sensation of the rhythm of her back and legs perfectly matching the moment the sound of the procession's footsteps came together while carrying a full load.

Object Carried Across:
The shoulder pad. It is the leather padding that protected her shoulders when completing the last camel's load. It is not a magical tool, but a personal mark connecting the ended caravan route and the current square unloading.

What They Thought Would Happen:
She thought that when the caravan ended, there would be no need for loads or porters anymore. She never thought she would carry loads again in another square.

What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
A union that shares the load, a day where heavy things are brought to their home. VOTS does not return the lost caravan route. Instead, it gives her a square with loads even without camels, a back that can continue to carry loads, and union members who carry together.

Original Life

Volga was the last foreman of the porters in a world where the caravans were winding down. She led the camel procession, decided how much load to put on each camel, and set the rotation for the porters. She always took the lead when facing heavy things and distributed the loads so that none of her union members were injured. Once, the procession stretched long between cities. However, trade ceased, the calling cities dwindled, and the camels grew old one by one. During the last procession, when an old camel collapsed on the road, Volga without hesitation transferred its load onto her own back. She walked the remaining distance to the end and set down the load, and the caravan disbanded like that. When she unbuckled the empty load strap from her shoulder, her back, which had been bent for so long, did not straighten.

What They Seek

What Volga desires for herself: The load that stays, not the load that is carried. She has only ever carried loads her entire life. She wants a weight that doesn't have to be moved anywhere, just kept by her side, even if it has no destination.
What she seeks but doesn't know: Her union members are already the load that stays. The union members—those she sets the rotation for, those she worries about for their backs, those she shares broth with—they are not loads to be moved, but weights to remain by her side. What Volga needs to find is not a new load, but the ability to recognize the people who are already staying by her side as a load.

Relationships — Residents

- Kaan Bur (117, from the same caravan world): Caravan contemporary. Kaan also came from a world where the caravan routes ended. When the two meet, they mention the name of an old trade route and ask, "Was there still a well there?" but since no one knows the answer, they just laugh. Volga speaks a little about the camels only in front of Kaan.
- Zahi Mole (166, from the same road): Someone who walked the same caravan route. Volga, Kaan, and Zahi are called the 'Trio of the Caravan.' When the three gather, the stories of the different sections they walked connect into one, and the broken road briefly comes back to life as a whole. However, since all three know that the road has ended, the story always ends matter-of-factly.
- Banta Kul (092, Transport): Transport partner. Banta deals with carts and wheels, while Volga's union moves things by human power. Volga handles the narrow alleys or stairs where wheels can't go, and Banta's cart handles the long, flat distances. They clearly divide their tasks: "This is your job," "That is my job."
- Moku Ren (batch1, Umbrella/Canopy Maker, Rainshield Square): Neighbor in the square's unloading area. Moku's canopy is the waiting spot for Volga's union. When they have to rest briefly while moving loads on a rainy day, Moku's canopy covers the union members. In return, Volga moves Moku's large canopy frame.

Relationships — Core Five

Suyeon - She is in charge of transporting stage equipment for Suyeon's performances. When heavy and large stage equipment needs to be moved, Volga's union steps in. When Suyeon lifts a piece of equipment with her ice-sword-wielding arm, saying, "I can lift this too!", Volga laughs and says, "Oh, you have the talent of a porter." But when Suyeon looks around, unsure where to move that heavy thing, Volga says, "You have strength, but a load is only a load if it knows where to go," and Suyeon subtly takes that to heart.

Iris - Volga also moves Iris's stage lighting equipment. When Iris says, "A drone could move it," Volga retorts, "Does a drone move kimchi jars too?" Since then, when Volga's union moves loads, they put a drone up front to light the way—a show of off. "It's my consideration, because you might trip if it's dark underfoot." Volga openly admits that the light has made night unloading easier.

the Ramen Owner - Moving the kimchi jars for the ramen shop is an annual event. During the winter kimchi-making season, the Ramen Owner has to move large kimchi jars to the underground storage, and this is the job of Volga's union. The Ramen Owner does not judge, saying, "Hmm... I see... Please do it again this year," while having a pot of broth pre-warmed. After moving all the kimchi jars, Volga shares that broth with her union members. Volga jokes, "The owner's kimchi jars get heavier every year," and the Ramen Owner just replies, "Hmm... is that so...?"

Serena - Serena granted Volga's union the 'consent' to use a waiting area in the square. When Volga requested, "We would like to use a corner of the square as a resting spot for the porters," Serena replied not with permission, but with consent: "Please do, it will be a good spot." Volga finds that this consent, rather than an order or permission, was strangely unfamiliar and comfortable. When Serena passes by that waiting area on a snowy day and asks, "How are the porters' backs?" Volga replies, "Thanks to you."

VIA - VIA records the list of loads moved by Volga's union. VIA writes down what was moved, where from, and where to. When Volga asks, "The loads we moved have already arrived, why are you writing them down?" VIA replies, "What was moved was also an event... it is what remains." And then VIA asks Volga, "What load do you stay with... the load that stays." Volga cannot answer, and VIA only writes in the notebook: 'Volga Sten, knows the loads carried, but has not yet found the load that stays.'

Gameplay Use

- Basic Interaction: Unloading requests, load carrying, strength-based dialogue.
- Revisit Change: Upon repeated visits, Volga gradually lets slip stories about the 'load that stays,' and in the way she looks at her union members, one can see her searching for it.
- Expression of Lingering Attachment: The habit of her back not straightening for a moment after setting down a heavy load, the brief pause before talking about the camels.
- Expression of Poignancy: Dialogue concerning the sound of the procession's footsteps, the weight on her back, and the tension of the load strap.
- Relationship Reward: Not a new item, but companionship that helps carry the player's heavy load to its home.
- Combat: None. In times of danger, she plays the role of clearing a path by moving heavy things or carrying someone to evacuate.

Daily Routine

In the morning, she checks the condition of her union members and sets the unloading rotation for the day. She starts the day by spitting on her palm and rubbing it, then tapping her shoulder pad. During the day, she moves the square's loads. She carries the heavy things at the front and looks after her union members' backs. She shares tasks with Banta's cart. In the evening, she shares broth with her union members or discusses old road stories with the Trio of the Caravan. At night, she loosens the load straps and walks—not for return, but so she can carry them again tomorrow. Upon repeated visits, the look in Volga's eyes toward her union members deepens, seeing them not as 'loads to be moved' but as 'loads that stay.'

The core cast does not resolve her lingering attachment for her—Serena only grants consent for the waiting area but does not decide the load that stays for her, the Ramen Owner warms the broth without judgment, and VIA only records the list of moved loads without owning them.
