Yupa Sel lived out the story of her own world and came to Nova Nivalis. The nursing home she cared for closed its doors, the last patient was passed to their family, and after descending the mountain, there was no one left for her to care for. She did not come to fix a world that was not yet healed; she drifted into this city because she still had hands and ears that reacted to someone's cough. Nova Nivalis is not a ward that forces healing. What continues here is not complete recovery, but the repetition of a warm cup of tea, leaves that slightly soothe a cough, and the alleyway while carrying a load on her back.
Identity
She is an herbal tea vendor who roams Snowfield Alley and the outskirts. Without a shop, she carries a basket of herbs on her back and sells tea by setting up a small brazier at an alley corner. She selects the appropriate leaves for those who cough, those who cannot sleep, and those with an upset stomach. Her work is the caregiving labor the city actually needs, but she does not call her work 'healing.' She preemptively states, "It won't make you well. It will just make it less hard."
Visual Profile
Long, hippie-style perm hair dyed olive green flows over her load. The color has faded in places from washing, and stray hairs always escape from her scarf. A small nose clip on her left nostril. Sun-tanned skin from long time spent in the mountains, and green stains on her hands and forearms from handling herbs. She wraps several layers of scarves around her neck and shoulders, and carries a basket filled with various herbs on her back. Her signature props are that basket and a small copper kettle tied to her waist. The core of her silhouette is the load basket, the layered scarves, and the steaming cup in her hand. The accent color is the olive green of the herbs, #6B8E23, which lets people know she is someone who handles leaves even from a distance.
Personality
Her eyes move to observe others first. Even during conversation, if the other person clears their throat, she subtly swaps their cup. She is affable and smiles easily, exchanging long greetings with the alley residents. Her flaw is the habit of putting her own needs behind others. She catches someone else's cough with uncanny accuracy, yet dismisses her own cough with "It's fine." She is awkward about receiving care; if someone offers to brew her tea, she waves it off first. She is not steeped in tragedy. She tells seasoned jokes learned in the mountains, and her playful side shines through when she insists on giving someone bitter herbs.
Speech Pattern
Her speech ends softly and roundly. "Try this." "Slowly, it's hot." "My body can wait." She mixes casual speech and polite speech depending on the person, and once close, she becomes relaxed, saying things like, "Enough, drink it." Frequent phrases include, "It won't make you well," "It's enough if it's less hard," "The cough tells everything," and "My body later." When silent, she listens to the sound of the kettle boiling or adjusts the knot of her scarf. She rarely admits to being sick, and she hides the story of the nursing home behind gestures of selecting leaves.
Special Ability
The name of her ability is 'Listening to the Cough.' By listening only to the sound of a cough, she knows what tea is right for that person. Whether it is a dry cough or a wet cough, whether it comes from the throat or the chest, the sound distinguishes it, and her hands move first to select the leaves that will soothe that cough. Her limit is clear. She cannot heal. She only alleviates the symptoms of the day, not the illness itself, and the root cause remains. The price is her own body. While she hears everyone else's coughs, she can never discern what her own cough sounds like. The ability cannot reverse any outcome. She cannot save people; she only offers a cup so the night is a little less hard.
The End Of Their World
Last Scene:
On the last day of the mountain nursing home, she handed the last patient over to the family waiting at the foot of the mountain. Until the moment she let go of the patient's hand, she was discerning what kind of leaves that patient's cough desired.
What Ended:
The nursing home closed its doors. The kitchen where she steeped leaves, the lamp she kept lit all night, and the nights in the ward where she measured time by coughs all ended together.
Last Person, Place, or Thing Seen:
The back of the patient descending the mountain path, supported by their family, and the empty ward with its door ajar behind them.
Lingering Regret:
The night before handing them over, she said, "You'll be okay without me now." She still doesn't know if that is true. This lingering feeling remains not as a quest to be resolved, but as a hand habit that overreacts to others' coughs.
Lingering Wistfulness:
Just before the kettle water boils at night, the sound of the surface trembling finely. Hearing that sound, for a moment, the long night of the ward and the smell of steeping leaves overlap.
Object Carried Across:
A muslin pouch containing a little of the leaves she last steeped for the patient. She carried it tied to her waist, without using it all.
What They Thought Would Happen:
She couldn't imagine herself without caring for someone. She thought that when she descended the mountain, there would soon be someone else to care for.
What VOTS Actually Gives Them:
The practice of enduring the time when she cares for no one, while soothing the coughs of different people every day. The city does not return patients to her. Instead, it gives her the days when she doesn't have to care for anyone, and the neighbors who awkwardly try to brew tea for her.
Original Life
Yupa Sel was the last caregiver at a nursing home on the mountain. She cared for people for a long time in that mountain, far from the city, where the air was said to be good for recuperation. As people gradually left the mountain and the number of patients decreased, the nursing home could not be maintained. On her last day, she bathed the single remaining patient, brewed and gave them leaf tea, and handed them over to the family waiting at the foot of the mountain. Then, she descended the mountain alone, carrying a basket of herbs on her back. That was the last act of care she performed in that world.
What They Seek
Superficially, she seeks her own body, which doesn't require care. She wants time to turn her hands, which were always moving according to others' conditions, toward herself for the first time. However, on a deeper level that she doesn't realize, what she truly needs to learn is how to be cared for. To accept and drink tea when someone brews it for her—she hasn't done that yet, and she doesn't even know that she can't.
Relationships — Residents
- Nima Afterglow (batch1, Light Collector · Beyond Last Snow Platform): They often meet on the outer patrol routes. Since Nima's time for collecting light overlaps with Yupa's time selling tea, the two take a short break by the brazier at the edge of the snowfield. Nima jokes, "Doesn't the light hurt?" and Yupa replies, "Tell me if the light coughs too."
- Berta Mum (028, Bathhouse Owner): While supplying herbs to the bathhouse. She regularly delivers leaves for the tubs, leaves for postpartum use, and leaves good for muscle aches. When Berta asks, "When are you going to soak your body?" Yupa always postpones it with "Next time."
- Sayo Renz (077, Night Delivery): She partners with Sayo when delivering tea to houses in urgent need of leaves at night. When Yupa wraps the leaves, Sayo gazes through the snow. They close their day by meeting at dawn and sharing the leftover tea.
Relationships — Core Five
Suyeon - A customer whose throat gets hoarse after a performance. For Suyeon, whose throat was raw from repeated practice for the meteor flame finale, Yupa selected mugwort-like leaves just by hearing the sound of a dry cough. Suyeon frowned, saying it was "bitter," but drank it all and came back before the next performance. Although Yupa preemptively said, "It won't make you well, it will just make it less hard," Suyeon replied, "That's enough."
Iris - A customer who comes with a hoarse voice after staying up all night. When Iris, who stayed up all night maintaining drones, asks for "something other than this" with a raspy voice, Yupa adds a little more honey. Iris pays generously and says, "I'll give you a good tip, but I'll come often." Yupa is secretly pleased with this taciturn regular.
the Ramen Owner - They exchange reserved greetings regarding the temperature of the ramen broth and the herbal tea. Knowing the owner is allergic to peaches, Yupa preemptively removes peach-leaf varieties from the tea he drinks. When the owner accepts the cup with, "Hmm... I see..." Yupa says no more. The silence between them is long because neither tries to 'heal' the other.
Serena - The one to whom Yupa composes sleep tea for those who cannot sleep. Even knowing Serena doesn't sleep, Yupa carefully blends leaves for someone with long nights and hands it over. Serena says, "Even though I don't sleep," but accepts the tea without hesitation, placing it by the window of her office and smelling it. Yupa says, "You don't have to drink it. You can just keep it nearby."
VIA - The counterpart in the carrot tea incident. When Yupa offers tea made from dried and steeped carrots as a test, VIA drinks it with great seriousness, saying, "Carrots are magnificent... they are magnificent." Since then, VIA always seeks carrot tea. Yupa finds it amusing that the rabbit, whom she thought was only serious about ramen, is also serious about carrot tea, so she sets aside a cup for VIA when passing through the alley. VIA even records the steam from that cup.
Gameplay Use
- Basic Interaction: Selling herbal tea suited to symptoms, brief greetings in the alley.
- Revisit Changes: Remembers the player's cough or fatigue and prepares the appropriate leaves in advance for the next visit. She does not try to interpret or diagnose the illness.
- Expression of Lingering Feelings: Hand habits that overreact to changes in others' voices, and words that postpone herself, such as "My body later."
- Expression of Poignancy: Sensory dialogue about the sound of the kettle boiling and the smell of steeping leaves.
- Relationship Rewards: Not new items, but introductions to her by the sick neighbors, or a small bag of leaves.
- Combat: None. Even in a crisis, she chooses to place a brazier next to the injured person and steep leaves.
Daily Routine
In the morning, she inspects the leaves in her basket by type and removes any spoiled ones. This check is not a compulsion but a small ritual that separates the mountain nursing home from the alley of the day. During the day, she follows a set route, setting up a brazier in each alley and brewing tea. Around noon, when the alley is most crowded and multiple coughs overlap, her ears are busiest. At night, she unfastens the muslin pouch at her waist to smell the scent of the remaining leaves once before retying it. For players who visit repeatedly, she gradually reveals pieces of her own story, and the phrase "My body later" lessens.
Even if they become very close, she does not reward them with a path back to the nursing home.
Everyday dialogue
Try the tea. If you grimace, the herbs will realize how powerful they are.
Never mind my health… Oh, I said it again. All right. A cup for me too.
I was too sure when I said they'd manage without me. These days I only want to ask how they're doing.
Design Notes
Palette: #6B8E23, #B7C48A, #3E4A24, #E7DEC7, #A8543C
Material language: Dried herbs, layered scarf fabric, copper kettle, muslin pouch, steaming cup.
Silhouette rule: The head-load basket-cup in hand-brazier must be read as separate elements, and must not overlap with the silhouettes of other vendors (Mago, Bami Cho).
Emotional rule: Lingering feelings are shown through the hand habit of overreacting to others' coughs, poignancy through the sound of boiling water and the smell of leaves, and continuity through the repetition of offering cups while roaming.
Canon Check
Yupa Sel arrived in VOTS after the care in her own world ended. What remains is lingering feelings and poignancy, not an illness that VOTS must heal for her. The city does not return patients to her, nor can her ability heal anyone. The new scene connects to the hands steeping leaves next to the closed nursing home, without erasing it.
